We are indeed spoiled. I refer to all my problems as "1st World Problems". It helps me realize that a lot of what I have going on is actually EVER that big of a deal.

LISTEN. BPM is on my XM 2 preset 2! I love that station. Reminds me of international clubs. I like house / techno in general (not as my first choice or second choice, but I definitely don't object when I hear it) so I'm glad we're on the same page!

I have seen mpg vary by almost 10 on the same stretch of road based on wind speed and direction. In the end it all averages out. Life is short, enjoy the ride.
Thank you, Sensei!

Here's my experience with MPG:

So almost 11 months of ownership now, I have lil over 4100 miles on it. It would be safe to say 90~95% of the miles on it are from city driving in LA. Terrible stop and go traffic. At night if the 101 is clear enough, I go around 70 or however fast the traffic flow allows. Safe to assume I don't practice economical driving.

(Also Eco button is off, I hate accelerating like a turtle having the car ahead already 2 blocks away when I barely get up to speed. But I do try to keep the rev under 3k.)

Currently the average MPG reads in the low 20s (22~23 at the moment). During the months before the first oil change it read 18~20 MPG.

Majority of the time I have the AC running (using max AC button) with the speed at 1, rarely 2. During nights I have the defroster on as the windows fogs up way too easily, with the speed at 1, temp set 2 clicks from the center into cold. That's just my perf I been using all this time.

Past month I been avoiding using AC in daytime and using only the fan, so the MPG went up to what it is now around 23.

So my low MPG is quite normal right?

Gray229 Thats awfully low mileage for 11 months. For city driving with your style I would say yeah that about normal. You can probably bring it up to around 27 with some conservative driving techniques, but it doesn't sound like you want to.

I've had my Elantra GLS for 6 months and I'm at 14,8XX; with the ECO on for the last 10,000miles and driving 90% highway I've averaged 31.8mpg. I'm extremely dissappointed in this car. The 2009 Sonata I traded in got 29mpg, was far easier to drive, and had way more space. It makes me sick that Hyundai's getting away with this. Their offering me $55 for @15k miles for the loss of 1mpg; when the fact is this car couldn't get 38mpg highway if the temperature, pressure, wind, tire pressure, a level road, and all other conditions were right.

Assuming the car is running properly, that's simply not true. Numerous instrumented tests have confirmed the car can get 40+ in steady-state, flat, no-wind, moderate speed conditions. In fact, two recent sources both confirm that the car gets 40 mpg at a pretty good steady-state clip (68 mph).

Admittedly, not many of us drive in conditions where the EPA highway rating (even after the recent revisions) are routinely attainable in normal everyday highway driving - not with the hills, traffic, AC, wind, higher speeds, ethanol fuel, etc. But that's a problem with the EPA tests, not the Elantra.

90% hwy and your avg is 31.8? You're either seriously underestimating your hwy miles or a lot of your miles are above 75 mph or both.

If I keep my heavy foot off the pedal, I can consistently attain 40-45+ on the flat Oklahoma interstate systems. Of course, that is driving at 60 mph. When vacationing in Virginia, trying to find 40 mpg on those hilly landscapes is might near impossible. Landscape makes a HUGE difference.
