Default OFFICIAL Steering Wheel Peeling Thread

Hey All -

To keep things consolidated and up-to-date, please post all your future steering wheel ailments here.

An attempt to merge the old thread into a more concise setting was fail, so sorry for the elimination of the old thread. The old one has been archived for your reference, merged with the old fuel sticky.

Unfortunately for we Elantra owners, a flaw in the design has been a prematurely peeling steering wheel. Many users have posted complaints and photographs of their steering wheels.

The good news is, it is replaceable under warranty, so it is an issue that can be quickly resolved by your dealer. They will most likely photo-document it, send the request to Hyundai, order a new steering wheel, then have you come in to replace it. That's how it's going for me, anyhow.

I get my new steering wheel on Monday. YAY.

To me, this isn't "issue resolved" at all because they replace it with the same wheel that will inevitably have the same problem. Eventually you're going to run out of warranty if you plan to keep the car that long. We shouldn't have to depend on the warranty to keep replacing an obvious faulty part, it should be fixed at the source.

Early spring cleaning for you huh Em? Truly dedicated mod!

Wouldnt it be better just get a aftermarket leather wrap instead? So you dont have to go through another peeling wheel. That is if you bought the car....

Angry 2012 Elantra

My 2012 Elantra started to peel in March. It's now peeling like crazy. I sent a e-mail a week ago to the dealership. Didn't get a reply so again I sent another e-mail. They e-mailed me back and told me to come in so they could take pictures. I went and they didn't take any pictures. They told me it was normal wear. Okay I only have 19,000 miles on my car and it's not quite a year old. This is NOT normal. When I said this to the Service Manager these are the questions she asked. Please keep in mind. What she is asking should not matter as "NORMAL" folks would say yes to many of these questions. So I guess I am not in the Norm. But again these question are insignificant questions. First, did I get my car detailed (NO). Did I use Armerol to the steering wheel (NO). why would I as this would make the steering wheel slippery, Do I wear jewelry (No), I don't wear rings or bracelets, do I work in construction (NO), ok lady I was wearing a business dress with heels, do I look like a construction worker. Do I use hand lotion. (NO). OMG folks this is ridiculous. Your product is defective and it needs to be replaced without the expense of the consumer. I had a Santa FA before this that had over 100,000 miles and it was a 2007 and never had problems with it peeling.

You might point them to all the "replaced" steering wheels noted on forum or try another dealer. THIS IS a product defect and I have had mine replaced at 4700 miles. Hyundai knows it is or they wouldn't have replaced all the ones they have so far. If you have another dealer, you might check with them.

Steering wheel was replaced with no issues from dealer. The texture appears to be more durable. We will see.

what did i mentioned before, dont trust warranty coz its all about business & doesnt make any sense DAVEYIV was right. They should do a recall ASAP.
Some before laughing and disagree when i said i replaced my steering with MOMO without airbags, etc... forget warranties, they need to solve the issue not replacing.

sorry , i am not posting any pix of my car - its hard to believed without any proof but thats who i am./

Yay!

I said it on the "What Happened" thread, but I took pics of my wheel, but accidentally deleted them while managing my files. Now my car is back there, so too late to take more. All you peeps need to know is that it had some areas of peeling on it, and I'm sure you have all seen it before.

Got the wheel replaced. It's a different, more grippy and softer leather, as I said in "What Happened."
