Default Grinding Noise When Braking

I recently purchased a brand new 2013 Hyundai Elantra and I have noticed that I sometimes when I brake fast but not fully slamming on them from going about 60-80km I hear a loud grinding noise. When this happens the roads are dry so I know that it is not caused by slippery or wet roads.

Does this happen to anybody else?

The abs sometimes makes a grinding noise if you are breaking over rough pavement. It's pretty sensitive to imperfections in the road.

+1 ^^^ What he said. I remember reading about that in the owner's manual only because it happened to me.

If it only happens the first couple of times you hit the brakes after the vehicle has been parked awhile (especially on humid or rainy days) then it's just normal surface rust being polished off the rotors.

ABS action is possible, as the above members have stated, but to engage the ABS at 80km/h on dry roads takes a pretty aggressive driving style. Anyone experiencing this on a regular basis seriously needs to slow down.

Other than that, your brakes should not be making loud grinding noises. It suggests glazed pads or warped rotors, both of which are free fixes at your dealer during the first year of ownership. It can also suggest that a spring cleaning & lube is needed, but usually only on cars that have been through a couple of Canadian winters.

As a general tip try to avoid hard braking on brand-new brakes, or anytime it is raining and the hot rotors might be splashed with cold water.

I also have the same problem on the 2013 Elantra. It has a total of just over 6,000 kilometres (3,700 miles) on it. On my Elantra the grainding noise comes only from the passenger side front wheel. It is clearly unrelated to wet/damp conditions and rust on the rotors or braking while driving on bumpy roads. What is peculiar is that only occurs with firm braking (not a soft braking or a hard slamming the brakes on) and the grinding in the passenger side front will stop after braking a few times but will come back after a number of days.

It appears others have identifies a similar proble. See attached link.

First time i experienced it (abs), it did scare me quite a bit, but you'll be glad it's there when times get rough.

I experience the same scenario in my Elantra. I am suspecting that it may be a result of the EBD (ELECTRONIC BRAKE-FORCE DISTRIBUTION). EBD balances braking forces at each wheel when the car is dynamically loaded. The question then is, does this only happen when you, the driver, are the only person in the car, thus setting the balance off slightly. I am simply hypothesizing here as I am trying to figure it out also

I was forced to hit the binders pretty hard last night. The Ya-hoo in front of me on the interstate suddenly slowed down. There were fireworks filling the sky. Guess he wanted to see them. My point is this: there was some grinding noise during my sudden braking. It never recurred afterwards. Of course, I wasnt placed in that situation for the remainder of the evening.

The grinding sound that is heard and felt occurs for me in cases where the driver is the only person in the vehicle as well as when there are passengers in the vehicle.
