Default PZEV or not PZEV, that's the question?

So what's the deal when it comes to the Elantra, are all PZEV, none, some? When I was first shopping for a new car I noticed that almost every Hyundai dealer had the cars currently on their lot listed sometimes calling it out and sometimes not.

Most any other manufacturer has a big ole honking PZEV emblem on their cars at least once if not multiple times. I know my car was labeled as PZEV on the window sticker and I am certainly not looking to add any more badges to my car but I am curious as to what the case is here.

IF I recall correctly, from a performance standpoint, my PZEV has ONE less horsepower than the non-PZEV models.

Danged if I didn't use to know, but memory is fuzzy on it now. Something about Alabama vs Korea plant or California compliant?

I'll defer to the moderators and experts to refresh my memory.

PZEV=Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle.
PZEV means this model meets certain fuel economy standards and classifies as a PZEV vehicle for sale in California. California has more stringent emmissions standards than the other 49 states of the union.
All PZEV cars I have seen so far where built in Alabama.

Some states are pzev only, others have both options depends on laws. Typically if law does not require pzev you wont see many. Aside from an extra filter in the airbox i dont know what the difference is between the two versions. Some manufacturers have different cats or egr system in their pzev cars.

It does depend on the state. The auto versions sold in NY are also PZEV. The PZEV engine has 145 hp as opposed to 148 hp with the standard engine.

IIRC, the PZEV cars have a metal gas tank instead of plastic. To earn the PZEV rating, the hydrocarbons that migrate through the plastic tank material are enough to disqualify the car.

The PZEV cars also have longer warranty coverage on the emission control parts.

My car is a PZEV and when I was swapping my winter tires out last weekend, I was surprised to see that the fuel filler tube seems to be metal. I don't know if it's rubber on the non-PZEV version, but it is on a lot of other cars.

The warranty on emission components is 15yr/150,000mi. I have an Ulsan (Korean) PZEV model, so it's not plant specific.

Never knew that about the gas tank or emissions warranty. Will keep in mind for my next car purchase.

OK, interesting, thanks. I knew what PZEV was, I just wasn't sure why they wouldn't all be that way. I guess if it's not required than it is cheaper to make it non PZEV. I am pretty sure it is not a requirement in NH so not sure why both are offered without trying to sell one as an advantage or special model instead of with all the rest and at the same MSRP.

So without a badge on the outside or crawling underneath to look at your gas tank or fishing for an extra air filter is there anything on a PZEV model that easily denotes it as such at a glance, like say if you were selling your car privately and someone wanted proof it was?
