Hyundai didn't scam anyone. They just made a car that is VERY sensitive as to how to get the EPA ratings. The 40MPG is not some magical made up claim. I've got this number several times so I know it's true. I am averaging in the low 30's with 50% country road, 25% city, and 25% highway driving.

When this car was tested in the city, I'm pretty sure they tested it in a smaller city (pop under 200,000) where the traffic isn't as bad. Any car (including the Civic, Focus, Camry, Cruze) would struggle to get their posted mileage as well. My friend has a new 2012 Focus and he lives in Toronto and travels in crazy stop and go traffic and averages only 23MPG despite EPA ratings of 28PMG in the city. I also have talked to a Civic owner who can only get 24MPG in the city despite ratings of 28-29MPG. So this is to be expected!

From what I read in here, most people can easily achieve the numbers if they drive conservatively.

Smile 2012 Elantra Issues

I've had more problems with this car than I care to elaborate on.. But one that I've noticed lately is that my odometer is consistently wrong. I noticed that everyone else posted about it being under? But mine is significantly over. A good 2 miles per trip. Not sure what can be done about this, if anything at all. I bought the car with the original 7.2 test track miles on it. It now says that I've driven 19,000 miles in less than a year, but I've calculated and I don't drive nearly that much. The only Hyundai near me is no help at all... so experience or help would be great!

My suggestion is test it on a long relatively flat highway and try to stay in one lane. Compare your odometer to the mile markers and see if it truly is off. Have a GPS plugged in too to compare the distance travelled. If it is truly off by more than a marginal percentage, then the dealership needs to test it. But I would have very specific proof prior to going in. As an example:

"I took the car on highway 123 starting at mile marker 20 and drove to mile marker 50. I had a GPS plugged in with a destination set past mile marker 50. When I started I had 43.2 miles till my destination per my GPS. After driving from mile marker 20 to 50 I had 13.2 miles to my destination. So I am very confident I drove 30 miles and I did not change lanes on the highway, yet the odometer reflected that I drove 34 miles. That is not an acceptable margin of error and one I need you to look into"

If you have done that sort of a test then I don't see any reason they wouldn't look into it and if they won't look into it, contact corporate. If you just walk in and say my odometer is screwed up, there is no way I've driven 19k miles already without any specific proof, there is very little they can do. Residential driving is not the best to test it on either. That is why a test on a highway is the best, and the longer the test the more accurate your results will be. Good luck.

It didn't take me long to figure out that this car is EXTREMELY sensitive to driving habits. You literally have to baby the thing with mileage in mind 100% of the time to get anywhere near the mid-30s. So far the best I've managed to reach is 33 mpg (display says 35.6) but the constant careful attention that is required to achieve this is tiring.

For comparison's sake, my previous car was a 1997 Corolla with a highway EPA estimate of only 31 mpg. However I consistently achieved 34 mpg with very little effort on my part, with the same commute and tires as with my Elantra today.

To say the Elantra's performance is disappointing is an understatement!

More detail is needed. How overstated is your odometer reading? How do you know this?

As many have discovered with the aid of GPS devices, the speedometers in modern cars consistently read 2-3% high. This implies that a similar margin of error in the odometer is "normal". But if your car is way over that and you can prove it then it bears further investigation.

If your comparison is that you accellerate at the same rate and brake the same, well.... the Elantra is 400# heavier than the Corolla. That extra 400# is there everytime you accellerate, making the Elantra work harder and one should expect that it would get a lower MPG. As for the difference in sizes, the Elantra is 3" wider, 3" taller, making it more than 11% larger area to push down the road. The Elantra's better Cd (.28 vs .33) more than makes up for this and should give the Elantra a slightly better consistent highway MPG (actual, not EPA rating). All other things being constants, which they never are, it is tough to beat physics.

Point is that the Elantra is a much larger car than the '97 Corolla. To experience close to the same MPG, no matter how much you have to work at it, is pretty good.

Good information! I didn't realize how much heavier the Elantra was.. I thought lighter materials were being used in cars today (the doors for instance feel lighter than my Corolla's did). My disappointment stems from the fact that it's a 14 year newer car (advances in technology and all that) and the EPA estimate is apparently best-case now whereas back in 97 it was quite conservative. Soon I'm going to have to turn that darn average mpg indicator off so I can just enjoy the drive instead of looking at it every 10 seconds!
