Hey guys im new to Hyundai. Bought my first 2012 Sonata Turbo few weeks ago and love it. However, im starting to think that the claimed MPG is no where near the REAL MPG... Am I alone in this?
Its an 18 gal tank right? and Im getting about 350 miles per tank which is about 19MPG... Dont they claim like 26mpg combined? The 350 miles im getting per tank is based on an equal amount of city/highway with a bit more hwy. I drive in ECO mode 90% of the time with cruise control and accelerate slowly most of the time. Yes I drive like a grandmother because my job reqires me to do 1000 miles a week, so trying to conserve gas and im disappointed so far

Your ride will not be completely broke-in until after 10K mi. Other folks will argue the point on how many miles. It's common to keep your foot in the throttle a lot when the toy is new. And if you do low 20's will be your average.
In town, lot of idling, heavy stop and go traffic and exercising the right side of the tachometer winding the lower gears especially all add up. What surprised me was the hit I took during A/C weather. I advise a full synthetic oil at OC and try to develop MPG skills. Leave it in auto and let the ECM shift. Give it a third to a little over half throttle and keep your pedal foot still until reaching speed. Anticipate stops, curves, downhill and intersections and coast in gear. Play around a bit and don't concern yourself too much as the car is new and summer blend petrol is gone for 2012. Last edited by bonsai; 11-14-2012 at 07:24 AM. |

I'm probably 75% highway 25% city. Most tanks averaging 30mpg with a couple around 28mpg. Hand calculated because the computer is 2 to 3 mpg optimistic.
Hopefully yours will improve after it's broke in. My "Eco" is always off. I think it makes it upshift too soon. I couldn't be happier coming from a Ram 1500 4x4 quad cab averaging 16mpg. |

I'm about 30% city and 70% interstate/highway and I always get about 27-28 miles or 450 miles per tank. On 100% interstate at about 75-80 mph I get 30-31 or 500 miles per tank. This is usually without eco on and the occasional passing people that are slow.

I drove from St. Louis to Houston Texas and back in the spring and averaged around 35-36mpg(may have been 37 I cant remember). That was doing between 75 and 80 most of the time. Im sure if I had slowed down to 60 I probably would have been around 39-40mpg, but on such a long drive(850 miles) that cuts almost 3 hours off the drive. I drove from St. Louis to Dennison, TX(just across the Oklahoma boarder into TX) which is about 550 miles on one tank and still was showing 50 miles to empty(although below 50 I dont trust it).

Hello AcesHigh,
I am confident that I am not getting the fuel economy as advertised on my 2012 2.0t. I am burning about 30% more. I've posted here about this a few times but did not get much information. My mechnanic checked the car out and all seems fine. I documented my performance and provided it to the dealer last June who was taking it to Hyundai. I never heard back. The 2.0t is not on the list of cars they acknowledge having under estimated fuel consumption in their advertising/specifications. I reached out to the dealer and to Hyundai's Fuel Economy program to ask for an update, but have not gotten a reply. I intend to pursue the matter in coming weeks and if anything comes of it, I'll let you know. |

I get between 25-28MPG. If I keep it in boost, it goes down quickly.
