Default FUEL INJECTOR CLEANER for engine

HI all, I have a 2012 turbo sonata and was wondering if a fuel injector cleaner bought at the local store is safe or necessary for our engines? (As they are GDI Turbo)

Thanks!

It's debatable as to what real benefit any fuel injector cleaner will do in a Direct Injection engine such as the one in the Sonata. Time will tell, historically it's not been a pretty picture for VW/Audi/ Porsche with little short of mechanical cleaning making any meaningful progress toward deposit reduction.

Hopefully Hyundai made some progress in this area considering how much they spent to develop this engine family.

All that being said, it couldn't hurt...

My personal recommendation if i were to use one would be Chevron Techron Concentrate ( not injector cleaner.) It can usually be had BOGO if you wait for a sale at the part stores.

Thanks Veilside1, that's informative. I guess i'll go return what i bought, and get the Techron stuff.

I plan on using it every oil change, would you say that's a good schedule to go by?

I'll be filling up with 89 octane gas for the forseeable future.

Every oil change is what Hyundai recommends, so go with that.

I get my techron at O'Reillys. They have 2 for 1 sales once in a while, thats when I stock up.

FYI, the detergent listed below that Hyundai sells is Techron. I'd run it through every oil change regardless. You DO NOT want your direct injection ports getting clogged.

From the Manual page 1:4

To help contribute to cleaner air, HYUNDAI recommends that you use good quality gasolines treated with detergent additives such as TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline, which help prevent deposit formation in the engine. These gasolines will help the engine run cleaner and enhance performance of the Emission Control System. For more information on TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline, please go to the website (Top Tier Gasoline)

For customers who do not use TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline regularly, and have problems starting or the engine does not run smoothly, additives that you can buy separately may be added to the gasoline. If TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline is not available, one bottle of additive added to the fuel tank at every engine oil change is recommended. Additives are available from your authorized HYUNDAI dealer along with information on how to use them. Do not mix other additives.

Oh yeah, Advance Auto often has buy1-get1 on the larger bottles of Techron that treat a 20 gallon tank. Stock up and save.

sounds good to me, that's what i do. Also, don't forget that Turbo bearings like clean oil as well so be sure to use a good quality synthetic oil to round out your engine care routine.

Lastly, i don't see the need for the 89 octane. This engine was designed to run on 87, that's the beauty of it IMHO, a low compression turbocharged engine...

there is a Hyundai memo about additives, also this has been covered in the past.

the OEM approved additive is chevron techron.

Chevron Techron not available North of the border, planning to pick some up at Advance Auto during my visit to Michigan in a few weeks.

I'm in the same boat as Sienna1. I'm north of the border... Will fuel injector cleaner from Canadian Tire do harm?
