Just want to tell that error so if happens to anyone.
i purchased my car on Sep, and it has 4000 miles on it right now. 4 days ago i was on 35 mpg road and on little hill, suddenly READY text start blinking. and said "Charging system failure" and car stopped . i was lucky, almost entering the highway. i started car and it gave same error again, but i was close to bank parking lot and i called Hyundai and they towed car to dealer. they changed the computer on it and some system which cost $4500 ,lucky under warranty. if this happens to you never believe if they say they checked and no replace needed and everything is working , so make them fix it. |

By the pricing that you quoted, it sounds as if they replaced your HPCU. Many early buyers of the Hybrid have experienced what you have had happen, with the car totally shutting down while driving. I thought that Hyundai had fully rectified the condition, but apparently there is still a rare occurrence here and there, which is a dangerous and scary event when it does occur. It happened a few times to me, and it was not fun to be in the midst of driving with the car suddenly coming to a complete stop, but thankfully I have not had an occurrence since the updates and software rebuild on my car. This thread link may help you out to understand better from those of us that had the problem:
Check Charging System On page 10 of this thread you can see a video link of the last time it happened to me and I was able to record the event, even though that was the first time that the vehicle did not actually shut down. Last edited by vinnyg; 12-26-2012 at 01:28 PM. |

Yes, I confirm this old issue is still in existence after all the software upgrades for a 2011 model. Mine - now at 14K miles - does that at the beginning of every winter (just experienced this last week, in fact).
It is very scary, especially if you are already on the Highway going 70+ mph. It took like 15 - 20 seconds on that speed to stabilize back to close to normal operation (as only ESC malfunction indicator remained illuminating afterwards). Now, I really have to pursue this seriously under warranty, thanks. |

HPCU = hybrid power control unit im guessing, would like to thank vinnyg for the highly informative info in his link, looks like the early adopters had some issues. So far so good here, im creepin up on 1100 miles on second tank ( that I paid for) so it would actually be third vehicle has had. It would seem that some of the symptoms occured when the vehicle was under high electrical load. Thanks for the informative link vinnyg!

Thanks, from what im researching the condition is rare but ts good to have a warranty, I will note that no technicians; hybrid approved or not are authorized to make repairs to vehicle unless engineers allow, and they can only replace components, the primary responsibility of hybrid tech is the proper power down and safeguard of system from electric death causing shock, and based on this invoice hyundai needs to pay thier techs more appropriately. Thanks for the info, this is still new technology and will improve with time.

Just my 2 cents. I also had this issue early on and had the computer replacement. I believe the fix that most others had was just a software upgrade and a cable connector replacement. Most people did not get the computer replacement. Make sure you also have that cable connector replacement, I believe it was a TSB. It's probably detailed on the other thread.
I'm at 52k miles without ever having that issue again. |
