Hi:
I have a 2011 Sonata. Recently, I have heard a faint knocking sound when I'm in reverse. It doesn't do it all the time. When I took it into the dealer, it would not make the sound while there. Does anyone know what causes that sound? thanks. |

First thought might be a loose/defective engine mount that only causes the noise when the drivetrain has different/reverse torque put through it.

Vague description.
Also, where do you do your oil changes and what oil filter do you have?

I had one in my garage and needed to do the oil change that day and I had run out of the OEM filters I normally buy.Best to stay with the OEM filters. Due to the tight tolerances of our engines because of every last MPG they squeezed out of it it can cause knocking. Hyundai actually put out a service bulletin about this dating back to 2005. http://www.hyundai-forums.com/attach...20-002-pdf.pdf

Dont knock yourself. Mine did it with K&N and M1 as well. So there is something different about the OEM filter. That has me a tad concerned. I am wondering if the bypass spring kicks in earlier or something.
Given the pictures Smoke posted a while ago, there was no real differences between the filters without using scientific equipment.

You dont discount anything when so little is given in regards to information. Mine only knocks when the car is in certain positions with non-OEM filters. It was most curious.

Interesting. I keep reading about the non-OEM filters here and wonder. I've had my independent shop do only one change so far so I've driven roughly 4k of the 15k on the clock with a non-OEM. No knocks. They use Quaker St filters.

I switched to OEM filters and it has never done it again. When it would do it is when I parked it at the end of the driveway where there was just the slightest incline so the rear was lower than the front...by like an inch. At the top of the driveway there was no issue.
