Not to step on anyone's ego, but if you really wanted a turbo car, you should have just bought one. Reguardless of what you've put into your ride for mods, if you would have just got the turbo, you'd be money ahead and still spending less on mods. I just don't get the price on this kit tho. 5K???
I liked my 2011 GLS, but I wanted the turbo, so I got the turbo. Trade in value was great, and the Hyundai rebates and incentives made it a great deal. THIS turbo car is under warranty too.

I read that as the tune and installation are extra cost.

I don't think those of us w/ a 3rd pedal would want more juice to contend w/. W/ an auto, yeah I agree if you want the ponies, just get a 2.0t and maybe have a ECU tune and get more out of that set up.

And this appears to be a piggy back ECU so what brand? I see references to Power Pack on the internet but it seems to be a rebranded something or another. Does the octane change? Can you run 93/91/89/87? I also see no mention of any sensors EGT or otherwise, which I would have to assume are there given the external ECU. But they are not mentioned nor are they shown in the picture. Dont get wowed just because it produces xxx HP and xxx TQ. Look at the fine print. The lower oil pan is a nice touch though. Also, there is no such thing as a "simple bolt on" when dealing with FI. Nobody wants to hear a naysayer but while its seems tasty up front look harder.

A couple of points-
The 2.4 has 11:1 compression. This wouldn't seem to be good for bolt-on FI, even with GDI. Also there are presumably differences in the engine internals on the 2.0 to allow it to stand up to the FI (different ring design, additional oiling, various reinforcements) that aren't present in the 2.4. I don't know if the turbo and non-turbo use the same transmission, the turbo trans may be different to handle the increased torque. Anyone looking to take $5K from their wallet, bolt this stuff on, and go faster is likely to be disappointed (and ultimately out a lot more than $5K). So I have to agree, if you want a turbo buy one from Hyundai. The main reason I didn't is the unavailability of an MT, but I'm happy with the 2.4 as-is. |

Personally I wouldn't be trying to modify the engine in my Sonata by trying to turbocharge it. A Nitrous kit would make more sense to me and it is a lot cheaper and is something easily removed later on. There are plenty of other vehicles on the market you can buy for the same total investment you will have in your Sonata that will perform better for the same price. And don't forget too you automatically limit the re-sale potential of your car (if that's important to you). I would think the value of the car will be less than a stock Sonata if you ever try to trade it in.
But, each of us has to make our own choices so if you want one of these kits, my suggestion is to give it a little time. Let a few others buy and install the kit and then wait for some feedback. If it is positive, then go for it if that's what you want.

If I had the money to blow, I'd love to buy a GLS and this just to see what would happen in a manual tranny with this kinda power (it's the only thing I don't like about my SE2.0). But, I don't have the cash to have a "throw away" car. And honestly, you screw up an aftermarket turbo, and that's basically what you're going to wind up doing.
That being said, LOVE that someone's making this and looking into these cars from a parts performance angle. =)

The 5k is just the kit. A Power Pack (tuning device) comes with it, but tuning is required by a reputable shop. So u could theoretically tune it urself, but if u don't know what ur doing, boom goes the engine. Also the install is also recommended by a shop. Al of these services will run the price up a tad.

My take is this:
I can spend $5,000 plus installation and tuning to get a 24 HP increase over the stock turbo from a GLS. Or I can spend $2400 over the base GLS to get the SE which in addition to the turbo also has better wheels and suspension. Then add $600 for a canned tune on an separate ECM that should get me about the same HP as the F1 kit. That's about $3000 cheaper so you have the cash can add other goodies like intakes, down tubes, exhaust, braces, and still come in cheaper and almost certainly more power. For a new car, it's a no brainer - go with the SE. |
