Default Passenger Seat OFF amber light On?

I am confused that when I start my car that on the dash just to the left of the clock there is an amber (yellow - warning) OFF lamp that stays lit.

Seems this is wrong. Why would you have an amber (or red for that matter) lamp on when everything is apparently running properly? It's very distracting to me and the first car I've ever owned that has an amber lamp lit when apparently nothing is wrong. I wonder that as time goes on if another amber lamp lit up I'd not even pay attention to it as now been 'trained' to ignore an amber lamp on when there isn't anything wrong, yet maybe now the new amber lamp is something serious??!!!

There is nothing on the passenger seat. ALL my other cars (we own 2 brand new cars and one older one) do NOT have any amber lamps lit when everything is ok. Amber lamps should be an alert something may be awry.

Any insight into this is appreciated. Hyundai Sonata GLS 2013.

this is normal. when no one is in the seat it says it is off in orange. my wife's vw does the same thing and my brothers xterra. seems to be a standard on most cars.

nonetheless, it doesn't distract me while driving

Yep it's normal. My Buick lacrosse has the same light when the seat is empty.

Even my corvette has a light that does the same thing. It is an airbag safety warning to let you know that the airbag is deactivated as small children should never sit in front of an active airbag. I can understand it in the corvette as there is no back seat but I would never put a child in the front seat of the Sonata.

Put a five gallon jug of water in the seat and problem solved

i realize i can do this - but i think this is a VERY BAD design!! Still thinking about this - once you become accustomed to this then when something else yellow comes on you prob won't even notice or pay attention and it could be something that could be serious and cause failures / damage!!!!!

IS THIS NORMAL??????

i have a new 2013 Toyota Camry Hybrid, a 2007 Honda Civic and a 2011 BMW il700 and NONE OF THEM do this!!!! I've never seen where you would have an Amber (something needs attention lamp) ON when there is absolutely nothing wrong! This is NOT GOOD in my opinion for my reasons stated that your brain will begin getting conditioned to this is 'normal' and when something that may be a serious thing comes on amber you'll ignore it or not notice it!! Simple As That!! It's human psychology- thus NOT good to have warning lights showing when there ISN'T anything wrong!

I don't have small children, 63 and been there done that, and no grandchildren (wish though we did) but don't think Warning Lamps (Amber) should EVER be on when there is NOTHING AT ALL WRONG! Period!

Same train of thought, then why don't they have amber lights on while many other things are NORMAL but what, as a warning that they gas cap is on maybe - for example? There isn't any rhyme nor reason for this warning lamp to be on and ALL my present (1 Toyota, 1 Honda, 1 BMW) DO NOT have any such thing. Nor ANY car I've owned over my entire life.

AMBER lights ONLY come on when there is something that needs attention. Not for something 'normal'.

Weird and bad design - sorry to hurt any Hyundai owners opinions and feelings - but this is my first Hyundai and I feel like getting into something very different.

Objection, Your Honor. Asked and answered.

If you think you'll get desensitized to it and think you will get so used to it that other amber colors won't alert you, then the problem is not the car, it is you. As others have said, it is on so many other vehicles, from Corvettes, BMWs, VW's, etc. It's the government protecting the front seat children, I guess. Not sure why it distracts you so much, doesn't seem to bother others. Can cover it with black tape, trade the car in, or live with it.

Just know that Hyundai is not really going to care if you like it. Safety features are safety features. Maybe if it was flashing...or even on the dash, but that far over....I don't see how you can not notice a new light going off in your dash, being amber, and not notice because it because an amber light is on three feet to the right.
