The OFF light is intended to warn a possible passenger that there is a problem with the system, like the seat has not detected the passenger is there.
The system turns off the air bag for passengers weighing less that x pounds. If the device that determines the weight of the passenger goes bad, the system will turn off the air bag even if an adult is sitting there - this would be bad. The OFF light would hopefully tip off the passenger that something was wrong. In other words, the OFF light, which is pointed at the passenger, is only a warning if there is someone in the passenger seat to read it. Last edited by MikeyTG; 01-06-2013 at 07:42 AM. |

I think everyone is missing the point here. The amber off is designed to be a warning IF SOMEONE IS SEATED there indicating that the airbag is off meaning a malfunction. Normal condition if NOBODY IS IN THE SEAT. This nonsense that "my Toyota doesn't do this" oh well - perhaps they have different engineers?

Ok we get your point. It's normal. Don't like it; sell your car. Relax. It's just a light that says "OFF".

its been around for some time. a co-workers 2001 explorer sport has the same thing. we carpooled for 4 years and and there it was...right in front of me all the time. the difference between then and now....he had to take a key and manually shut it off - where alas...an AMBER warning sign was glowing. the difference nowadays, they took the human error factor out of the equation and made a minimum weight to be applied before AUTOMATICALLY turning the airbag back on.
you don't like it, go tell the litigious society we have that keeps driving these changes to take some responsibility. *stuck gas pedals because of floor mats...geesh...* |
