Default Article - Hyundai wants your NFC-enabled smartphone to be your car keys

This seems pretty cool once you get past the part about not being able to drive home if you lose you phone:

Hyundai wants your NFC-enabled smartphone to be your car keys

...or...when you go to the beach there is no leaving your phone in the car anymore.

concept.....i understand
practicality....understand
application....needs work/tweaking

Ok, we all use our smart phones for everything. many on here have stated they stream music thru it, use bluetooth, and some use the navigation on their phones. i think this concept should be an option to activate within the car (similar to autolock feature, headlight delay, etc). it should not replace a key or the fob to start the car as a mandatory feature.

they have to have a key override - car washes, valet, garages etc, service/warranty drop-offs, etc.

would i use the feature...probably...i can't say i absolutely would not. the wireless charging and navigation would be useful. how many of you have already integrated or are looking to integrate a remote start via your smartphone, isn't this along the same lines? remotely unlock/lock the doors already?

push button start was considered to 'star trek' few years back...now, it's becoming common across most manufacturers.

Yeah, it think it would be a nice added feature, but I wouldn't want it to actually replace keys. What would you do for your wife's key for example. Or like someone else said, leaving the phone in the car at the beach. Of course, do I really want my sentry key with me on the beach getting wet?

My NFC enabled device doesn't work well with my Sonata. It works fine in my other car. So, no thanks. I just got this new phone in December.

I cant download contacts/previous call history so why would I expect the NFC part to work right?

Great idea, but from the article, and from what I know about NFC technology, I'm not going to want to pull out my phone and hold it up against anything to get in my car. If it worked like a proximity key, then I would use it.

This needs to stay as a strictly backup/emergency feature (Blue Link), if even that. I don't want to have to drag my phone out of my pocket/holster/under my coat to tap/scan something on the window. That's no better than having a standard set of keys; a step backwards if ever there was one. It doesn't help that cell phones are getting BIGGER now. It's also one more thing to prevent the phone from going into a deep sleep state

And yeah, Bluetooth is anything but reliable when you need it.
