Cleaned my engine last summer with no issues. I made sure to block the air intake and cover the alternator. Then I sprayed some Autoglym engine cleaner, brushed off dirt on some of the components and hosed it off (shower, not jet). Dried it off with towels and used 303 Aerospace Protectant with a microfiber to give it a nice shine.
