I get mine done at the dealer every 4,000 miles or so. $34.99 and includes a 35-point inspection. They use conventional oil, but that satisfies warranty requirements and is perfectly acceptable.

Question? With my other cars I switched between regular & synthetic. On my Elantra GLS I wanted to use synthetic for the winter & then switch back to regular in the summer. The local service manager stated that you can not switch back & forth. Once you go with synthetic you MUST stay with it. Is this true???

I think I will confront them on this. In the meantime, do any of you have opinions on my brand-agnostic stance: i.e., as long as the oil is dexos-1, one brand should be as good as another (standard brands from a big-box-mart)?

You are going to confront them on what they charge? Yeah, good luck with that. They will tell you to go to Walmart or change it yourself. no one, including the dealership on Hyundai says you must use synthetic or use a dealership, let alone that dealership. I'm sure they charge that much because people are willing to pay for it. As crass as it might sound, I'm sure they consider their staff on a higher scale than a Walmart oil change guy. Want to pay a 17 year old, making barely over minimum wage to change your oil, go right ahead. Want to actually do it yourself, go right ahead. Or bring in your own miracle oil and they will do what you can't/won't.
Free market economy. They change what they want and I'm sure they get it. If people insist on syn, then they'll have to pay $xxx for it. They know they can get that much, or have people just opt for non-syn. Hey, maybe you can talk them into a $10 discount. If you think it is worth your time and effort, go for it. Chances are you will just end up as the guy who they'll laugh about in the back of the shop. |
