not sure if anyone else reads car and driver magazine, but they have a 40k mile test for the 2011 sonata in their December 2012 issue.
I thought it was interesting that they also experienced a left pull issue, and the dealer could not fix the problem. They also had the in cabin gasoline smell. |

Amazing they didn't get it fixed knowing its C&Ds car and would be written about.
Hyundai needs to make the steering on their cars a lot better.

2 things I see as notable to me.
1. The interior and exterior still looked modern after their test and resale ready condition. 2. Fuel additive not needed unless you live in "Waziristan", That was funny but also not far off from true. As long as we get our gas from big brand stations all should be fine. What C&D commented on was a little biased in a way. All brands have issues when the put cars on the street with new redesigned major components, Problem is that in the next few years each different brand is going to have the same growing pains when trying to increase MPG as well as re styling the car. The more technology added increases the rate of issues, it has always been the nature of the beast. Even Ferrari has had issues, like wheel well panels glue catching fire or turn signal controls integrated into steering wheel without thinking that turn signals are only correctly orientated when steering wheel is right side up and level. All makers make mistakes, not all makers cover it with a long warranty. We may have an odd issue here and there but we have a good warranty to fall back on.

My mom is on her 2nd Camry and it is already 6 years old and the inside is clean but looks so outdated and cheap. And she paid for an extended warranty. She has had about as many recalls as my 2002 explorer had. My only campaign for my sonata was a reprogramming of the TCM. The way I see it is that Hyundai really does design and build the cars with long term ownership in mind, Other brands focus on the here and now and some reports of long mile life, and look more forward to an owner seeing a newer style and upgrade again and again. Hyundai put the rest of the market against the ropes, they put more features in the car for less money. Other brands are going to have to match this to stay at the top, the down side is that they are prone to trim cost in one area to fill another. I expect the top brands to have their time coming soon where they will hear lots of complaints or bad reviews. Honda already has a problem with the interior looking and feeling cheap. My daughters 2012 civic drivers door panel arm rest is peeling apart, I have had mine twice as long as her car and I don't have any problems like this. Honestly the only problem I really have is the red R on the shifter not lighting up sometimes. My MPG went whacky and I could barely handle 24mpg, I disconnected the ground for 5 minutes and now I am back to 27-29 mpg with eco off. C&D can not really give a true report on a car unless they get, say, 5 cars and then do long term tests. And each model has its own issue once in a while. The only issue that covered all models was the tranni ( new style, problems expected). I hear complaints about the engine noise/sounds, but haven't heard anything about major failures. Forums are today's standard to find out the ups and downs and ins and outs of anything. Magazines are not comprehensive enough anymore, they were good in their time but time has ran out for them. The Digital Age has made a hard turn in the direction of information, They survive on advertising and that has its own reflection on how print is biased.

to be honest, i think the warranty is great, but if they cant fix a left pull issue after 7 alignments and replacement of parts in between those 7 times, then what good is the warranty?
i have the same left pull issue and have been back 4 times already only to be told that "they fixed the issue and drives straight as an arrow". only to get into my car to drive home and there is no change. it's one thing to have a warranty and a part fails a few times but is replaced under warranty to get you back on the road, it's another thing to have a warranty and the problem cant even be fixed. now you've lost all hope. i still love the sonata but i think this is a bit ridiculous now. |
