FYI, sometimes your equipment will generate a code that you read to them on the phone and then they can generate the number that authorizes your particular unit.

The first USB we had for the 2011 when new, we were directed to leave the car idle, as using a battery charger would allow possible AC hum into system while programing, it was better to leave the car' charging keep the power maintained..

The number they want is your "DEVICE" number, starts with "540" typically if I remember correctly.. find in the system info at bottom I think it is along withthe softare version related stuff.. I have pics of random screens, lazy to go get them right now.

When they get the device number, they will provide the authorization code for you to enter, and proceed..

So that is how the updates work. I was wondering what stopped people from selling the map update to somebody else after loading.

If they announce an update for the 2013 models, I really hope that there's a clause that allows for free updating if you've purchased your car within X months.

The 2013s may already be up to the version being sold for the 2012s and below.

Well, what looked simple - isn't. Since each call has produced more questions I just hung-up from MapNSoft and the guy actually stated a Battery Charger was preferred - And - he didn't know what AC Hum is / said Dealers use Battery Chargers.
I trust sbr711 that Idling is the workable approach - I just hate the thought of it.

Unlike 2 others there who stated Driving-while-Updating is Do-able, he cited electrical variations - from draining the Battery while it's Not Charging and then Charging kicks in when you slow to X speed - as a potential Uh-Oh.

Order Pg Alert: All Current Destinations, Phone #s, etc MAY get Erased and (per Svc Rep)there is No Back-Up File capability as a protection. sbr711, I'm sure you would have mentioned this if it had occurred at your place - BUT Buyers Beware - it's Possible --

Even though I can see a Device ID via Setup NOW, I Confirmed to WAIT til Step 6 to Query NAV for Device ID and THEN Call/go Online for Auth Code. Somehow the ID can re-set and cause issues during Update by getting a Code before starting.

When I looked at Order Pg they Sneak in $10 for 8GB USB cost, so it's $99 + $10.

Somebody be courageous and post what happens / I hope all these contradictions helped!

Here's my take on the whole voltage thing:
When the engine is running the "radio" sees almost 14 volts. When under battery power it will see from just a tad over 12 to maybe 11.7 or 8 after a while. How about we use something like an old-school Radio Shack 13.8 volt DC regulated power supply? The kind they sold for home CB radio set-ups. They are rated at 5 amps continuous and have very little ripple or hum. Might be worth a try?

I'd just pay for the gas to idle the car.

Just don't do it in your garage!
