my neighbor says that his uncle from a previous marriage says that they are different. i've heard that same thing about coffee too...starbucks is the same as your local gas stations!

besides...around here, quiktrip dictates the fuel prices. when they increase/decrease....nearly all the others will follow suit, whether they sell top tier or not. all the same price around here unless you want to go to sam's club or a costco that sells gas around here. too me...quiktrip is 1.3 miles from home...150 ft from highway entrance ramp. i'll spend the extra $.01-.02 per gallon to ensure it is backed and guaranteed.

The "top tier" thing is all about the detergent specifications needed to maintain emissions. Mobil, Shell, Texaco, Exxon, and Chevron all sell top tier gas.

GDI engines require some form of detergent to help prevent carbon build up and deposits on the injectors and valves.

For the average MPFI engine, top tier may be a "waste of money" but it is a near necessity for GDI if you want to keep it clean and operating well.

years ago I had a 1986 BMW 528e and I always pumped the cheapest gas around until one day I had no choice but to use a 76 station. a few mins after pulling away from the station there was a noticeable difference in the ride. It felt like the engine was running a lot smoother and made less noise. Ever since then Iíve been using top tier gas

So are we concluding that hi test fuel is what should be usd in the Sonata Turbo or jus buy regular unleaded from a known gas station like shell?

I'm confused too. My manual says "Your new vehicle is designed to use only unleaded fuel having a pump octange number ((R+M/2) of 87 or higher."

Isn't this just regular unleaded fuel? The cheap stuff. There is no mention of top tier fuel in the manual for the 2.4l GDI engine. So am I good feeding her 87 Octane gas from Shell / Esso (Mobil), Petro Canada? I always avoid the little unknown guys like Fas Gas and so on anyways.

That's what it says. If you don't use top tier gas, then add injector cleaner.

If that's the conclusion, then they are wrong. People are confusing top tier with octane. They are simply NOT the same.

A top tier fuel has blahbity blah certification because of the detergent package. These packages are in all GRADES (87, 89, 91/93). Putting in 93 octane in your sonata is not required nor is it recommended unless you are experiencing issues with knock.

And as for that super informative article not one lick of fact/support in that "story". There are links to other "detailed studies" that still provide/yield nothing to back up the story. Its a fluff piece.

Here's the link that explains Top Tier gasoline. http://www.toptiergas.com/

I'll be using what Hyundai recomends for my 2012 Sonata SE, a Top Tier gasoline.
