So can we get away with a clean cut across or do we have to make the notch as well? I didnt do that mod which explains why my light pattern sucks so bad

The notch on the bulb serves as a LOCK that keeps it in place in the headlight housing. If you just cut across, there's a tendency for the bulb to rotate and move (due to vibration) since it will only be held by a clip.
