I just purchased a new 2011 Hyundai Sonata GLS that has Bluetooth built in. I had no problem pairing my iPhone 4 with it. The problem I had is that when I called someone, they complained about hearing an echo of their own voice. I tested it myself and confirmed it. I discovered if I reduced the Bluetooth volume on my iPhone down to the lowest setting that it significantly helped. However, there was still a shorter echo that the caller could still hear. I did not hear any echo on my side, only the caller was hearing an echo of themselves.

After a lot of troubleshooting with the dealer, we discovered the problem. The version of the Bluetooth installed in my vehicle was 3.12. There was a new version, 3.13, that came on Sonata manufactured after late October 2011 that work fine. Unfortunately there wasn't an update disk for the car so they actually had to swap the radio out. The new radio with the software update works without any echo whatsoever.

I thought this might be helpful to some people since I couldn't find any information online about it.

The volume portion is known and has been discussed in other threads but the BT firmware issue is a new one. Did you notice any other changes with this version other than your echo getting better? Like did it affect the sorting of names in the contact list other than forcing Last, First? I would think that FW update would be available via USB, probably just the dealer didn't have it. Would be interesting to see the release notes on the new FW version.

When you hit the Bluetooth button on the steering wheel, the radio display used to just say something like "Please Say A Command". Now it shows a few of the command options directly below it. Also pairing your phone has a more streamlined process. I'm not sure about all of the other options since I hadn't used the Bluetooth much because of the echo. I do believe it is still sorting Last, First but most of the time I can't get that to even recognize the names I say out loud. I ended up just adding those names directly to the car.

Really no excuse for poor name recognition at this point. From the experimentation I did with the Hyundai service mgr, it seems that the contacts are transferred in somewhat different condition to the Sonata depending on the phone it's connected to. Doesn't make a lot of sense, unless the file includes some kind of "pronunciation hints" of some sort. For example: names transferred in from a Droid X or an iPhone are recognized via voice dialing, and the car pronounces them correctly. Names transferred in from my Blackberry 8900 are NOT recognized via voice dialing, and the car does NOT pronounce them correctly when reading back the name it THINKS I asked it to dial. Interestingly: when a name IS dialed (via phone), or an incoming call arrives, the proper text is displayed on the radio - so I can be sure that the phone book DID transfer, and the text itself is OK.

What's really frustrating is that voice recognition for name dialing on cell phones has been working pretty well for the last 4 or 5 years or more, as witness numerous phones using VoiceSignal or Nuance software. This is my 4th blackberry with very good name dialing, and I had an old Windows Mobile 6.5 phone (T-Mobile MDA) that had excellent voice dialing. Sad that a 2011 car can't do as well.

I have had no problem with it recognizing anything I say...the only issue I have is having to say the Last Name, First. I displays it on the display as Last Name, First too. Many are complaining it is alot of steps to complete a call. I agree but if you use the blutooth button on the steering wheel and just say call Smith, Joe mobile(or home) you only have the confirmation to deal with. I do wish there was a way to shutoff that confirmation. By the way I have a Droid 1

Interesting, because mine and others that I've read have to:

<me> Call Name
<system> Name Please
<me> Smith, Joe at Home

I can't simply combine it and say Call Smith, John. It will NEVER work that way. But If I say Call Name, then the name its virtually 100%

But I don't want to steer too far off topic...

Joel,
Visit http://hmaservice.com/ and create an account. You'll be able to see all the TSBs there. The TSB number is 10-BE-013. It is called "PROCEDURE FOR ACCESSING BLUETOOTH SOFTWARE VERSION" and was issued on 12/21/10.
