How does it know I am home?

I was picking up one of my teens from work last night and got there a little early, so I parked and got out. Several minutes later, we left and drove home. When I parked in the driveway, I noticed the short trip display and it was round trip miles - 11 miles versus 5, which is also an interesting point that it doesn't show any fraction, since it is obviously 5.5 miles (I saw it at Taco Bell also). So how did it know? I was connected to my phone via BT, but not running Android Auto or connected by USB.

EDIT TO ADD - about the fraction. Not a big deal, but in this case it mean it was off by 10% for the one way trip.

Fellow members take note: We've located George Orwell's elusive "Big Brother." Thirty-three later. He's alive and well, living in Andy's Elantra! :puzzled:

My guesses on your query? BlueLink, the black box recorder somewhere in your car (YES, there's one onboard), or thru your WI-Fi? In all honesty, I've never even given this a thought. But it's a GREAT question.

Every so often, the NAV displays a message that my car is due for service. That may be my on-board CPU kicking those out. Again, clueless here.

If you or others narrow/nail this down, let me know.

I've wondered that same thing too. I've also noticed that the myhyundai page knows my mileage, so there is some kind of data reporting mechanism. It is a little concerning, because I don't think that they asked if they could track me...

If it helps, I do NOT have bluelink.

MyHundai tracks it only by assumption. It asked for mileage and average miles per
day when you joined. I was fairly accurate in my estimate and I thought maybe it was tracking when I saw that several days later it was very close. But then we had a winter weather event and I went a few days without driving and my actual fell well behind. I updated it again by typing in the miles. You have to click like you are going to make a service appointment to get the option. It's not a well thought out site.

I am now wondering if it just keeps accumulating trips until there is a really long break between them. I paid more attention today. My trip to work and trip home were treated as separate trips. I came home around lunch time and worked about 3 more hours before leaving again. I drove a kid to an appointment 40 miles away and sat in a waiting room about an hour, got home and ran another to an appointment 2 miles away, where I sat only 20 minutes and then after coming home again I went and filled up about 3/4 of a mile away. It totalled all three of those trips together. So now I am wondering if it is time. Somewhere between 1 and 3 hours parked it decided I had completed my trip.

>thinking< your wife is a CPA and you're a software engineer....eh...and you make the statement above? This is a first I've heard from anyone where their careers are deeply driven by numbers...yet it doesn't matter. >teasing ya, Andy<

Something else that comes to mind- how does it know you're home instead of at work?? I suppose the time stamps if any would give an indication...but there are people that work in the evening/ early AM hours...so this makes little sense. It's still something to think about. Perhaps it has something to do with once a smart phone is plugged in, the navigation unit reports some collected data phone your phone /or most likely the navigation unit is referencing to collective driving data habits.

It doesn't know... It only assumes, according to your driving habits.
Dude...so cool. Your posts draw me in...well, the hysterical ones at least. >kidding< Your recent addition to this thread was in the serious nature. Meh...where's the humor?

How many of us constantly drive the same route everyday? May have a brand new vehicle, but the scenery is the same, look for changes like if there is a new weed growing along side of the road. Started dropping off my younger brothers at their schools, this finally ended in 2007. When they were old enough to start driving with my extra training, dad, where should we go. Let's drive to your school, most of them didn't even know how to get there. The youngest one that had to be tied up by law, fell asleep when they first got behind the wheel, brainwashed this way from the time they were planted here.

First car I ever had that showed the mpg for this same trip, did mention 20 mpg, been has high as 38 mpg, traffic makes a huge difference and whether you hit a red or a green light. Distance never changes, but get a different mpg every time making this same exact trip and not a darn thing I can do about it.

Ha,when I was flying a lot, was wind, plane cruised at 140 mph, with a 50 mph tail wind, would be 190 mph, if that was a head wind, 90 mph. Huge difference in fuel used.

It read your registration when you were sleeping. It also knows your heart rate, your blood sugar level and the number of your bank account.

I'd watch my step if I were you...
