Calling all Car Gurus... What's that metalic rattling sound I hear?

I often hear this metallic rattling sound when driving. I have verified it with a service tech during a test drive at my last oil change appointment, although, I did not have time during that visit for the tech to troubleshoot the problem... so I Airdropped an audio recording of the sound to the techs phone and then later followed up with the service manager to see if there was any known resolution. There wasn't any specific fix that he could suggest at that time.

So, before I follow up with another appointment to get this resolved and the latest DCT update performed... I'd like to hear your thoughts about what may be causing this rattle and what the service techs might need to know or do to resolve the problem.

To reproduce the sound (and to semi-quote another thread), I can generally do the following... drive city streets (it's not as noticeable at highway speeds) with the AC off and either free flowing or recirculating cabin air (it doesn't seem to matter). When you notice the rattling sound... turn on the AC and you will hear the rattle spike and then completely disappear. Perhaps latent air is passing through a spinning fan when it is off, causing the metallic rattling sound? Or a loose vent? Anyways, here is a couple of audio clips of the sound... although I didn't capture the spike when the AC is activated.

Any help is appreciated...

It's definitely a rotational noise. Where in the car is it coming from, (i.e.; under hood, rear, left/right, underneath, (drive shaft maybe)?

I general, I hear the sound coming from the front vents... which is where I held my iPhone (at the vent to the right of the steering wheel) when recording the noise.

I don't always hear it... but it is very common and as I mentioned... will spike in a spin-up rattling and then disappear when the Air Conditioning Fan is activated.

Something definitely sounds out of tolerance or faulty.

I know others have heard the same noise because I found these forums when researching the rattling noise I was hearing because I like to be informed before discussing a problem with a tech ; )

Again, any help is appreciated.

Hmmmm...

It would be very helpful to have someone drive along side of you (in a large empty area) to find out if they hear the sound too...on the exterior of your vehicle. You need to narrow down if it's coming from the engine area, the rear, underneath, or interior of your vehicle. Have you opened your hood and had someone else rev your engine while you inspect around and under? Fans, belts, loose metal heat shields, etc, can easily cause this noise. If you only hear it on the interior, it's probably an air circulation fan; but what about a speedometer cable? Not sure if those have changed and become all electronic now.

I would remove cabin filter and see if you can see anything in the blower basket.

I suspect they have, my 2002 Focus didn't have one ...

Even without the cable, it could be the speedometer head, or tachometer - but it wouldn't vary with AC settings like he says it does, so probably not that.

Almost want to say the squirrel cage fan for your blower motor. Maybe something has gotten past the vents underneath the windshield and is now interfering with its rotation.

I too suspect that it has something to do with a spinning fan of some sort... but wonder if it is more of a tolerance or faulty assembly of some sort.

Possibly temperature (expansion/contraction) plays a part, but I've already sort of dismissed this since it seems to happen in hot, warm, and cool weather conditions.

As I mentioned, the sound(spinning metallic rattle... like a fan) isn't always present... but very common and disappears when the fan is activated.

I will try to make another recording that captures the spin-up sound and silencing effect.

My hope is to narrow down the cause and discuss it with the technician and service manager to get it resolved during my next visit.

I found others with the same problem... yet, after checking their profile,
noticed that they have not logged into the forums for awhile so they likely won't reply.

I thouht i was the only one. Mine is not as bad as yours but rarely, only sometimes it would make a similar sound at lower gears. Not in high speed but onky low gear, like when slowing down to find a parking spot or something. I thought it would be the transmission or engine being dry somewhere..

I talked to the Service Manager the other day to give him a heads up about researching the cause of this rattling sound during my next visit for an oil change.

Anybody else have any thoughts on what could be causing the metallic rattling sound?
