As many of you know, I am a blogger and car reviewer as well as being a Tucson owner. I've been tracking this issue regarding the availability (or lack of availability) of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in Canada. Long story short, I had an interview with Hyundai Canada this morning and I will be writing a story on this issue in the next 24 to 48 hours. While this will be a bit of a spoiler, I truly believe that there's a lot of moving pieces here that have clouded the issue and after this conversation with Hyundai Canada which I will share with you via the article that I am writing, I hope to clear the air and give you the facts on this situation.

Related to this, while I was tracking this issue, I've received help from many of you on this board when it comes to tips and information. I would like to thank you for helping me with this as I don't think I could have written about this to any degree without your help.

Thank you for that. I really appreciate the kind words. I had some time today so I worked over the last couple of hours and got the story done and posted:

Let me cut to the chase here. I spoke with the Senior PR Manager at Hyundai Canada today at length. I really think they tried to communicate what they knew to consumers as they got the info. But sometimes, that communication didn't go as planned. Plus MnSOFT releasing an update with Android Auto which was something that Hyundai Canada didn't see coming didn't help things. I honestly think that this was one of those situations where things went sideways and Hyundai Canada should likely get a free pass on this.

I'm looking at this from as neutral of a perspective as I can be considering I own a 2016 Tucson which means I have skin in the game.

None of us were promised by Hyundai Canada (by that I mean their corporate offices and not your local dealer) that this update would be free. Nor in the media lead up and the corporate marketing stuff done by Hyundai Canada that I have laid eyes on was this ever promised to be free or even possible. Now the Americans did promise this and I am guessing that that we in Canada would expect the same treatment. So far that doesn't seem to be the case. Maybe that will never be the case. So I don't think that it is fair to hold Hyundai Canada to something that they most likely never said, promised, or committed to.

Here's the flip side of this argument. Ford and FCA are two companies who have offered up these sorts of upgrades for free. Sure you can make an argument that Hyundai Canada should do the same for nothing more than optics reasons. And for the record, I have made that exact argument as consumers these days expect the infotainment systems in their cars to be just like their phones. As in, the manufacturer should serve up upgrades that consumers can do for free. But there's nothing that says that they have to. Perhaps it is something that they will consider going forward.

Please keep in mind I am not defending Hyundai Canada. I am simply offering up an alternate perspective.

Hi The_It_Nerd,
If you don't mind can you take a some pics of the 3-D birdseye navigation ? That and the updated maps would be a reason to upgrade for US folks if those are worth it. I used to have a Veloster and it had nice 3-D maps and I don't know why Hyundai did not include those with the Tucson.
Let us know if any other improvements besides AA.
Thanks

That is a good news!

It sure sucks however that we CANADIANS do not get this for free like the rest of the world and are fed a shovelfull of BS with the HARDWARE incompatibility. All was needed was a software update like everyone else.

Thank you for testing this for us.

Now i need to think if I want to burn 300+$ to get it now or wait if Hyundai Canada will do something to make things right.

Can you please send the link to your blog post to the people you spoke to yesterday?

I don't have to send him anything. Here's why:

1. He was aware of the MnSOFT update as I quoted him as saying that this update “took us completely by surprise”. Thus the fact that I got the update and now have Android Auto and Apple CarPlay will not be a surprise to him.

2. Hyundai Canada was already aware of my stories on this subject prior to me speaking to him. I'm pretty sure that seconds after I posted the fact that I now have Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, it popped up on TweetDeck, CisionPoint, or whatever tool they use to track this sort of thing.

Here we are two Canadians apologising to each others just to perpetuate the stereotype...

Now the big question >:D : would you be willing to share the files on the SD card you got to check if the security is in the card itself as they did not ask you for your VIN or system ID?

I hope someone makes the update available online. I just took ownership of my '16 Tucson and was under the impression that Canada received the update for free as well. Imagine my frustration when I googled when I got home.

P.S the update is showing out of stock so it seems that ordering isn't even an option at the moment.

Hi Folks,

Been reading this thread. I own a Canadian Tucson...I just got off the phone with Hyundai USA and there are sending me the android auto update via email within the next couple days. If anyone wants the file let me know and I'm sure i can get it send out via google drive or something. When i bought my car in April the dealership ordered my the map update V9.5 and were very surprised this week when i told them there was a new update out and this was the only way to receive the AA update. I'll keep you all in the loop.

Cheers.
Sheldon
