Check BSD System Warning

Since Wednesday I have had a warning that says "Check BSD System" pop up on a cold start (it never pops up on a warm start). It displays a warning on the supervision cluster in the form of a orange exclamation mark for anywhere form a few seconds to five minutes. Then it disappears. While the warning is present, BSD doesn't work. But when it disappears, it works flawlessly.

I took it the dealer on Friday and they found a code for battery over voltage and cleared it. Then drove it around for a bit to see if the code returned. It did not. They gave me back the vehicle and of course the error returned the next day because they didn't really look at the issue. They simply cleared a code. I called the dealer and after expressing my disappointment in terms of them seriously looking at the issue the first time around, I had them book me in for Wednesday.

My question is that while the owners manual basically says "take it to your dealer if you get this error", is there anything that I can check to try and sort this myself?

Thanks for any feedback that you can provide.

So I went to the dealer today. They found the same code as last time, but this time they checked over the wiring and here's what they did according to the work order:

SCAN AND TEST - 13.8 MAIN 13.2 SUB ON START

INPUT BSD ECU HARNESS AND CHASSIS GROUND

APPLY DI ELECTRIC GREASE TO CONTACT

CUSTOMER TO MONITOR

Here's what I think this says. Please correct me if I have this wrong. They tested the wiring and everywhere a cable related to the BSD system plugs in, they added dielectric grease which is electrically insulating and does not break down when high voltage is applied. Dielectric grease is often applied to electrical connectors, particularly those containing rubber gaskets, as a means of lubricating and sealing rubber portions of the connector without arcing. So based on that, the theory must be that there's a short someplace and this will hopefully fix it.

When the service advisor (which by the way was a different service advisor than I dealt with on the first service visit), he gave me his name and told said that he would not guarantee that the issue would not return. But if it did I was to call him and he would order a brand new BSD system. Once it arrived at the dealership, he'd book an appointment and have me come in to have it swapped out which would take about 2 hours and requires removal of the bumper.

Thoughts?

Today I got the warning and the system shut off. It was a sunny day, nothing interfering with the sensors in the rear bumper. I was close to the house and when I got home I turned the Tucson off and back on and the system was functional.

I'll see what happens tomorrow and hope not to have to make a trip to the dealer.

Good to hear... I haven't gotten the warning again so it must have been a one-off thing.

Thanks for the link to the blog post... This is one of my favorite features:

"Even with the headlights on, the dash will automatically go to daytime brightness once the sensor detects sufficient ambient light."

Here in Florida it's normal to have the headlights on during daytime rainstorms (it's the law actually) and in other cars I've had the dash would always darken and stay that way or I'd have to select daytime mode on the infotainment screen. It seems like a small thing but it makes a big difference in the driving experience.

The Tucson has a bunch of little things that I have come to appreciate. It sounds like your BSD issue was different than mine as I've had it display the "BSD Cancelled" message twice in heavy rain (it fixed itself after 10 minutes or so). Then it did this. Hopefully you don't have anything that requires you to go to the dealer and it was nothing more than a fluke.

i have the same issue with my 2015 sport model. when i need to get the Check BSD error off, i first start the car, shift the gear to D, and turn off the ignition while the gear stays on Drive. Then after the engine turns off, i shift the gear back into P and restart the ignition.
At this point, the error message is removed and the BSD works fine. "sometimes you may have to try the process a couple of times to get it to work"

it works fine for the day and goes back to the error message the next morning.

Got the error as well last week, while pulling a trailer. Guess it didn't like that there was something constantly in the same spot, so it turned itself off. On way back home it didn't disable itself, also pulling trailer, so not sure what the deal was. Unless it matters that it was daytime when it shut off, and night time when it didn't.

Well, I have a 2016 Sonata Sport and started getting this same error and the BSD system shuts off. Initially took the car to the dealer to get checked, but due to the time of day, had to make an appointment for a week out. When I left the dealer the the warning light was off and I was able to turn on the BSD system. The next day it came right back on a cold start and has never gone off since then, which is 4 days later. Also the ABS light is now on and one time I felt and heard an bad noise in my brake pedal. With a pending long trip coming up I am not trusting my car to make that journey through mountains which will encompass about 3500 miles.

I replace the right sensor for my sonata 2016

now i get this DTC : c175342 SOFTWARE MISMATCH ! Any idea?
Needs to be programmed into the car by someone aftermarket with access to Hyundai programming software or a dealership. Modern cars have modules that need to be programmed in, the Germans are awful for it.

Hey everyone, I have Sonata 2018 Sport... Everything was working all fine and suddenly one day I see a warning on my Dashboard thay says “Check BSD System”... it just popped up for a second and went off... I thought it would be something that I can ignore... Days went by and that warning came up more frequently... and this time, the RPM needle, Temperature needle and Speed Needle goes to 0 and all the warning lights such as ABS, Traction, Hand Brake, Steering and Engine lights come up... This happens sometimes while I am driving or while the car is in P... There is no difference in performance of the car... The car runs smooth... its just the Dashboard lights come up and the needles goes to 0 while I am actually driving... Another thing, While the BSD warning is on, the BSD sensors dont work, but as soon as it goes away, everything works fine... I took my car to dealers amd they cant find anything even after taking 2-3 days... Can somebody help me here??

You probably want to open the hood, pop the fuse block cover off and go to town with a pressure washer to get the bad electrons out of your electrical system.

No, don't.

First thing is to get a vehicle system code scan done, I don't think generic OBD2 readers will communicate with every control module so you'll need access to a fancier scanner or have a dealer/independent shop scan it and give you a breakdown of all the codes.
