Transmission Whine?

I've recently taken my Veracruz from my wife as my daily driver and have noticed my transmission has a loud winding up noise from a stop ( I hear it the best in my condo complex). I'm not sure if it's always been there our not,.does anyone else notice it? My car is at 60,000 miles, so maybe the at fluid needs to be changed, I would just like some input before I spend $200 for something that wasn't needed

If the whine goes up and down with speed, I doubt very much its a "fluid" thing(unless there is none). Do you hear it change as the gears change? Does it continue up with engine speed? If with engine speed, its more than likely a bearing, pulley or component like an alternator or water pump. It could also be the transfer case if you have the AWD. Lets see...keep replacing parts yourself or have it diagnosed by someone who knows what to look for for a $100 and fix it properly...I'm just sayin...

That's the thing. Im not sure anything is actually wrong with the car. It just seems to have gotten louder, but not loud enough to warrant concern. I noticed it this morning starting the car, and going slow through my neighborhood. It disappears later, so now that I think about it it's probably just the high idle.

After researching a little from other Veracruz (and Entourage) owners, your suggestion seems to be correct, i've read of a few with a noisy idler pulley

Thread revival....

My Veracruz has developed a pretty bad bearing whine of some sort (corresponds with RPMs). Anytime I've heard this noise in other cars, it was solved with either a new idler pulley or alternator. I couldn't find enough information to suggest that one is more prone to bearing failure than the other. Maybe I'll order both parts, install them both and be done with it. Anyone have any experience with this?

Bought both at NAPA. $80 for the alternator, $42 for the idler pulley. Will replace both tomorrow.

Nevermind, found a few threads on the Azera about the idler pulley. Will do that first.

I had a bad idler pulley in a Nissan Altima, and it created an rpm-sensitive whine as others have described.

PS: After 5 years and 60,000 miles I'd change the tranny fluid no matter what.

Idler pulley fixed my bearing whine. Fairly easy procedure.

1. Jack up car and remove front right tire
2. Remove lower access panel (4 10mm bolts)
3. Find tensioner. It's the pulley assembly with the 19mm nut welded to it.
4. With a 19mm socket and long extension, put force counter clockwise on 19mm nut. Once enough tension is released from belt, pull belt off tensioner pulley.
5. Pop off black cap on idler pulley to reveal 14mm bolt. Remove bolt with 14mm open ended or ratcheting wrench. You won't have room to remove the bolt all the way with a socket wrench. Reverse process to install new pulley.
6. Insure that belt is routed correctly over all accessory pulleys. I used a plastic cable tie to make sure the belt didn't pop off the rear bottom pulley (didn't pay attention to what accessory it drives).
7. Release tension on tensioner, slide belt over tensioner pulley. If you have a helper, it's probably easier to just route the belt over everything but the alternator and then have the helper pull it over the alternator pulley when you turn the tensioner.
