Hello all,
Just found this group and was hoping someone might be able to help me. I am looking to buy a 2004 Santa Fe. The lot that has it is advertising it as a GLS but looking over the equipment it seems pretty heavily loaded plus their price is more in line with the LX. It has leather, monsoon stereo, 3.5 liter engine with AWD. Also has auto climate control but no electric seats nor sunroof. I have even tried carfax, but when running the VIN they show it as "GLS/LX" Don't know why Hyundai doesn't label them. I have had the same issue with my father in law's SF. He can't remember which his is..Anything that is only on the LX and not an option on the GLS? I was reading on one review site and they sounded to say that the 3.5 with 4wd was only on the LX but dont' know if that is correct.

Thanks in advance.
Oh, is there any scary problems this model might have? I was headed toward a Lexus RX300 until I found they are plagued with transmission problems.

Thanks again,
John

jonjon,

You are in luck as I priced the 2.7 and the 3.5 in both the LX and the GLS versions...in 2004! It is possible to get a 3.5 liter GLS with lots of options. Use this to your advantage! Get the NADA Blue Book Used Car Pricing Guide for your area, and develop your buy price by starting with the GLS and building up for the options added. This will give you the cheapest buy price for you, and a valid price basis to point out to the seller.

You can also use Kelly Blue Book (kbb.com) but these prices tend to run high, but it is free and you can incrementally add each accessory.

If it has the auto climate control and leather it is most definitely an LX. I don't think a power seat was offered until 2005.

Thanks for the tips! He has it advertised as a GLS but priced as an LX..I should also bring up that at 63K it's due for a timing belt, yes? Not that he may bring that into consideration.

Thanks for the help,

John

Not a problem, that's what we are here for . Timing belt is due at 60k and there is 60k service. I forget what is required in it. I think it's mostly inspection, and some flushes. Hyundai does get very strict after 60k and I have heard quite a few times if you don't get it done, it will void your 100k warranty.

I am not sure if I would even qualify for any of the remaining warranty. The carfax shows two owners but one being the lot that has it now..I know when my mom bought her used Sonata years ago, they sold her an extended warranty but she later found out from Hyundai that because she was the second owner that some of the warranty transferred to her...But it definitely needs that belt, I sent them a note asking if it was done but I suspect the first owner traded it to avoid that expense.

Thanks,
John

Telltale from the outside: LX has chrome door handle pulls. The GL and GLS do not. And an easy way to tell what engine is under the hood without having to look there is by the tailgate badge. If there is no badge, it's a 4-cylinder. If it says 'V6', it's a 2.7 liter V6 and if it says '3.5L' it's the 3.5 liter.

60k service includes:
  • Oil & filter change
  • Inspect vapor hose and fuel filler cap
  • Replace engine air filter
  • Flush and fill engine coolant
  • Service transmission fluid
  • Inspect drive belt & replace as necessary
  • Inspect brake hoses and lines
  • Inspect and clean brake pads, calipers, & rotors.
  • Inspect suspension mounting bolts
  • Inspect power steering pump and hoses
  • Inspect driveshaft and boots
  • Inspect A/C refrigerant
  • Inspect belts and boots
  • [b]Replace timing belt (may be extra for 3.5 liter)
  • Inspect fuel lines, hoses, and connections
  • Inspect crankcase ventilation
  • Replace spark plugs
  • Inspect brake fluid
  • Inspect rear drums and linings (if equipped) and parking brake and lean
  • Inspect exhaust pipe and muffler
  • Inspect steering gearbox, linkage and boots/low arm ball joint
  • Rotate tires
  • Service A/C as needed

I just noticed you have a Prius. What year is it and will you be trading that?

Do you mind showing us the link to the Santa Fe? In most cases the 10yr/100k transfers but the 5yr/60k doesn't, not that that matters.
