Default 03 Santa Fe 2.7 PCV Valve/Charcoal Canister Replacement

I have major problems pumping gas in my Santa Fe. Takes about 15-20 minutes to put in a full tank, constantly trips the pump. After reading other problems that are similar to this I concluded that I probably should change the Purge Valve and Charcoal Canister. This issue has been going on for about 2 years now and I am finally fed up with it. At one point when I would initially try to start my car after pumping gas it didn't want to start and I would have to wait. After I had the engine replaced when the timing belt broke I no longer have the starting problem. However I still have the problem pumping gas and the check engine light is on. I would like to change this part(s) myself if possible. Does anyone know where these parts would be located on the vehicle?

If it constantly trips the pump, then you will ultimately have to replace the vent valve, which requires you to drop the tank, along with the charcoal canister. Trust me, I've been there.

The EVAP components are easy to replace yourself, save some money there (the canister ain't cheap though, around $150.) The issue is that the pellets from the canister have leaked into the system, and made their way to the vent valve (which causes the pump to trip.) Location? Look under the car around the middle of the vehicle. (It is housed in a metal casing.)

Hope this helps!

1 --> WHAT is the DTC recovered ?

Quick self test for the refuel situation :

Under center of floor pan in tunnel you will spy a steel/rubber line combo coming forward from tank to canister assembly,,,,,,, seperate the rubber line from the steel tube, then try to refuel..

If it fill up fine and dandy, then we have issue with vent path via the canister which will not breath to atmosphere, thus I will suspect we will recover a P-0446 code (I can't breath code)

If all above correct, replace the canister,, then while apart, top it off with new canister close valve and air filter to complete the vent path overhaul.

The pump always trips, like 20 or more times during my fillings. I ultimately have mechanic who will do things for me and my guys at work inexpensively. He said somewhat of the same things you did...but his quick fix would be to remove all the charcoal temporarily until I had enough money to change it completely. I did not like that answer considering I think the charcoal serves a purpose of cleaning the gas that is put into the vehicle. So I figured if I can do it myself, why not. However he did not mention the vent which I obviously would not be able to do myself. So I guess I should do both at the same time and just have him do it all. It wouldn't be much of a cost difference considering he would already have the vehicle on the lift. Thank you for your help. This thing has been killing me slowly and I finally give up. It's so frustrating trying to put gas into my vehicle.

Yeah..... The big problem is that you have those **** charcoal pellets in the system, so he will need to clear everything out so that you don't have to do this ever again. Lesson learned (for me) don't top off. That is ultimately what caused the issue in the first place.

The charcoal doesn't clean the gas being pumped into the car. It absorbs some of the gas that evaporates inside the tank, stores it and then lets it get burned next time the engine is run. You can do without the charcoal pellets quite nicely.
