Default 2005 Santa Fe air conditioner troubleshooting methods?

Hello all, thanks in advance! AC system only blows hot air. Random AC shop from the yellow pages charged $30 to check the AC system and proclaimed a new compressor and hoses were required to the tune of $1300 (Can anyone say RIPOFF??). Being a skeptoid I'd like to troubleshoot it myself but have zero experience in this area. Can anyone suggest a good set of starting procedures to troubleshoot this system before I give up and take it to the shop? I'm no genious but no moron either. I've trawled the web and only found a few basic steps for checking fuses/relays, measuring the low pressure end of the refrigerant, and checking to make sure the condenser fan isn't burned out Hyundai Santa Fe Air Conditioning Troubleshooting
but it sure would be nice to have a complete list of steps to go through before I start poking around in the wife's pride and joy, no pun intended.
Thanks again everyone!
Dave

I'm going out on a limb here----but; It has most likely lost its charge. If there is a leak someone will have to find it, repair or replace the component and recharge the system. If you have it charged and havent identified the leak the refrigerant will just disperse again. Having someone pull a vacuum on it should tell if there is a leak. Then you'll have to identify, etc.
