Hello and thanks in advance for any help!

My '03 Santa Fe has not started a handful of times over the last few months and I'd like to fix the problem before it leaves me stranded at some remote trailhead. The car will be running fine, I'll turn it off (not for long) and then when I attempt to start it again, nothing. I thought it was a battery or something like that, but then I discoverd that to fix the problem required that I mess around with the park shifter. IE either push it towards "P" to ensure that it's in Park or to shift it to neutral and start it that way. I've probably had to use this fix 4 or 5 times in the last 3 months. I assumed it was a faulty swich which I would eventually replace, but I was content since I knew the work-around.

That all changed this weekend when I got in the car and wasn't able to move the shifter or start the car. It was stuck in park and the car wouldn't start. When I say stuck, I mean that the button on the shifter could not be depressed. I hit the brakes several times thinking maybe it wasn't registering, but that wasn't it.

I listened closely and could hear a slight clicking in the ignition every time I tried to push in the button on the shifter. After a few moments of jiggling the keys in the ignition and pushing in the shifter button, the shifter finally released and moved into a different gear. I then shifted back into Park and it started right up.

Any idea what's wrong?

Sounds like the inhibitor switch. It prevents you from starting the engine in a drive mode and is a common problem in any make car. Can't tell you how to fix it though on a Hyundai. The last time I had the problem, it was on a '72 Superbeetle, but I was able to get the switch out, clean it up, and it continued to work.
