Hi All,

I am going to change the engine oil on my 2003 Santa Fe 2.7 V6 Auto (111k miles)

I am going to put 5W 40 Fully Synthetic in (I haven't decided on the brand - I am open to suggestions)

Does this sound OK? Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Just looking for some reassurance really!

5w40 is great if you live in warmer climates and plan to go ~10Kmi between oil changes. I run 5w20 in mine and change it out around 6Kmi.

I used to do preventive maintenance aand kept the records in a factory where we took oil samples every month and I sent them to a Mobil lab for testing. The Mobil engineer I worked with drove a Chevy pickup with Mobil 1 in the engine. He was doing an experiment (for his own information) where he only changed the filter and added back what was lost in the filter change... no complete change since the first time he changed oil at about 2K. Last I knew, he had over 100K on it. He pulled a sample and ran it through their lab when he changed the filter every 5K. At 100K, the oil still met new specs and looked fresh.
I don't know whether it was Mobil 1 or the Chevy that was good, but I'd bet on the Mobil 1... Chevies weren't that good in the early 2000s (I know, I move vehicles for a dealer and have driven about everything).

go to the website "motor oil evaluator" its a uk site but they have checked out almost all the oils out there any in the top 10 would be a good choice but do your research ........ not sure you would need a forty weight ?? how hot does it get where you live ??

I've used 10w30 mobil 1 since I bought it in 2003. 83k miles so far and I haven't had it in the service shop since I bought it other than a timing belt. For the last three years I've gone to the Extended Performance mobil 1 since I've only been changing it once a year(an average of around 12k miles per year).

first I would consult the owners manual for the correct oil weight to use. The viscosity of 40w is way to much even in a hot climate plus
your gas mileage will suffer. Suggest a 5w20 or 5w-30;but stay within the range of the owners manual. I, personally find full or blended systhentic to not
be worth the extra money. Just make sure the oil you buy has the "star burst" symbol on the bottle - most synthetics do not - this means the oil
is certified by the API automotive engineers.

Note: I don't need any replies as to the pros and cons of fossile vs Synthetic oil, I really don't care. There is no one answer.
It's a personal choice only within the boudaries of the manufactuers oil requirements as spelled out in the owners manual.

For much of the year, our climate here in Oregon is much like that in England; cool and wet. The owners manual for my '04 suggested 10W30 for those conditions and when I switched to synthetic, that's exactly what I used. I ran it for 100,000 miles on that blend and never had a problem.

There is actually one answer. Synthetics last longer than conventional oils. I know BMW mandates full synthetic and their cars routinely go 15k miles between oil changes. I have a VW which requires synthetic 5W40. I had my oil analyzed by Blackstone Labs after 5,000 miles ( the VW recommended interval ) and Blackstone told me that there was still plenty of life left in the oil. I could have gone 8-10k miles if I wanted with no detrimental effects. If you are going to change oil every 3k, conventional is actually fine. If you want to go further, go synthetic. You can run 3 times the oil change interval and save yourself some money.

It is not recommended to go to a thicker oil unless your vehicle is having oil consumption issues.

For this 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe you can see that they only recommended 30 weight oils for this vehicle and 15W40 is not listed as an oil to maintain warranty or anything.

I have used this oil in an older Hyundai from the 90's and it worked awesome, I might add.
