Smelling strong fumes when stopped in traffic or backing up. No exhaust leaks. Mechanic found oil leak from rear valve cover onto exhaust manifold. He tells me that replacement of this gasket is a 2 to 3 hour job @ $250 labor and $100 parts (approx) Is this reasonable?

Is it the dealer or third party shop?

The gaskets can be had for under $50

Having a little trouble with the protocol. It's a third party shop. They were quoting approx gasket set prices from memory of a recent similar job.

If it was my car, I'd try two things:

First of all, I go around all the valve cover bolts and try to tighten them down a little first. Then I change my oil with "high mileage" stuff because is has seal conditioners that cause seals and gaskets to swell up a little. If that didn't work, then I'd just buy the gaskets off eBay for $40 and change it myself.
