Hi there,
I have a Sante Fe 2005 and when I start it, all is ok with no dashboard lights showing. The first time I press the brake peddle, I get both the ABS and ESP lights that stay on.
I do not have any problems with braking as such, although I have not tested to see if ABS actually works, although I suspect it will not.

I have also noticed that although I can turn Cruise Control option ON and OFF, I cannot set a driving speed....................not sure if it is related at all??

Is there anything I can check first before I have to get it booked into the Hyundai garage..................

Thank you

Check for fault codes. You may have a bad sensor somewhere that isn't doing its job.

Where do I check for 'fault codes'? Surely I need a plug-in gizmo to provide this information?

You need an ODB II scanning device. Usually in the states I would tell you to go to auto parts store for a free code scan. There's a connector under the dash near the steering wheel.

Probably your cruise control is tied into the speed sensors which control the ABS, thus it won't work and give false information.

The problem is with the brake lamp switch. It affects the TCS, ABS and cruise crontrol. There's a recall for it on just about all Hyundais. Go to a dealer and have it fixed for free. See here:

Thanks for the info guys, very much appreciated

I checked to see if I had brake lights last night and found that I do not!!! Not having them driving in Riyadh is a major hazard!

I took the car to the place where the original owner bought it which is one of 3 Hyundai dealers in Saudi Arabia. I mentioned the recall on the brake switch but that was dismissed.......they then tried to charge me for looking at the ABS light and ESP OFF light as separate jobs!! Not to mention the non functioning brake lights. They then tried to push a 70,000 Timing Belt change on me as I also needed a 60K service but I declined. They then included additional items for engine and fuel flush treatments...........lucky I know a few things about cars otherwise it could have worked out more expensive.

I have had to leave the car with them and expecting it back tomorrow (Wed) or maybe Thursday. It must be a time-warp out here, which takes a bit of getting used to...........

I used to have confidence in dealers, but due to the economic downturn some companies are really trying to push unecessary sales/services on their customers.

I hope to report back a much improved customer service experience when I pick up the Santa Fe ...................and the bill

Unfortunately what you describe is not an uncommon dealership experience. There are good and bad stores, no matter the country they are in. I hope you pick up your car in full working order come Wednesday.
