I've been having some issues lately with the ventilation in my Santa Fe. I'm not sure if it's A/C related or if it's more of a general issue with the ventilation.

My wife typically drives the vehicle and noticed the issues. First, she noticed that even when the car was off (and key removed), the light on the button to select inside vs. outside air would be on.

Next, the fan would not turn on at all at any fan speed or any vent setting (feet, bi-level, face, defrost). The fan will come on when the car first starts, but after running, it just stops. No noise or anything, just shuts off.

Last night, it happened while we were driving and initially, I could just turn the system off and then on and it would start back up, but then shut off within a couple minutes.

Today, she noticed when either the A/C or the defrost was turned on, some water shot out from somwhere underneath the glove compartment near the passenger door.

Tonight I pulled the glove compartment off and looked in the air filter casing (there's no filter in there) to see if there was any sort of build-up, and there wasn't anything major. The fan seemed to be blowing plenty of air through without issue. I looked underneath and saw where some water could have come out... I'm not familiar with the names of any of the equipment under there, or what it does. Where the water came out was near what looks like a motor or compressor on the passenger side just underneath the glove compartment on the far right side. That's the best I can describe it.

I put everything back together and the wife went to pick up dinner. She drove about a mile with everything running fine with only the vent on (no A/C or defrost). However, once she turned on the defrost, the system shut off. I'm guessing then that it's something to do with the A/C, because most of our driving of late has been done with the defrost on because of a lot of cool, rainy weather. I initially thought that the wetness and humidity from all the rain could've just caused some sort of condensation or something in the system, but now I'm wondering if it isn't something more serious with something in the A/C system.

Whatever is the problem, it causes the whole climate system to be unresponsive. When the fan shuts down, it doesn't start up even if the A/C or defrost is turned off.

I would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions as I'd like to have an idea of potential problems when I take it to a mechanic. Thanks.

You may have two problems, a bad control cluster and a plugged condensate drain.

The A/C coil in the car, called the evaporator coil, will cause moisture in the air to condense on itself because it's cold. This moisture drips down the face of the coil to a tray underneath it which has a drain that leads to the underside of the car. The water that runs out the drain is easily noticeable as a car air conditioner runs, especially in warm, humid weather. If the drain is plugged by dirt, the water builds up inside the air conditioner case until it finds the first hole it comes to, where it will drip inside the car, soaking carpets and eventually causing a musty, moldy smell. The problem is solved by sticking something up into the hose from under the car and dislodging the plug that has stopped up the drain. if your hand gets wet, you just fixed the problem.

The funny control problem can be caused by a bad control cluster in the dash. These have a habit of going bad from wear and tear and electrical stresses at switch contacts. It's not just the Santa that has the problem. I've seen it in GM and Chrysler products, too. There are several on the board who have had to replace their control cluster for similar problems as yours. Maybe one of them will jump in here and make a suggestion.

An update:

Well, oddly enough, everything is running fine right now. I haven't done anything since the night I pulled the glove compartment out and checked everything out. After that, the wife had a problem that night, and since then, there have been no problems. About the only thing that has changed is that it has stopped raining here. I'm not sure how a lot of rain could have caused that, though. Anyway, as of right now, everything works great.

So a few days ago, the fan stopped working altogether. Took it to the dealership and they initially diagnosed it as a bad blower motor and replaced it. After they replaced it, they were messing around with it and found the relay was also bad, and that was what likely caused the motor to go bad. We'll see if that really does the trick.

Chances are that if the relay was bad, it was the only issue that needed to be fixed, but a shop will never admit to that. I have spent a fair bit of time working on older vehicles and have a great deal of time into electrical systems to gain additional power, lighting, etc. While newer vehicles generally are already so-equipped, most of the older ones I've owned did not have relays or circuit breakers in them at all. Relays by design, when they fail, simply don't deliver power to the end-system they are attached too, much like a blown fuse. To bad they didn't check that first.
