I have a 2004 Santa Fe GLS 3.5L that has 238,000 miles on it. Just recently it started running a little rough. My local mechanic read the codes and it said that cylinders 1,3 and 5 have random misfires.

He replaced all 6 spark plugs (they were due) and replaced the plug wires to the 3 cylinders in question (1,3,5). We could see that one of the wires was arcing and since they were original wires they really needed replacing.

But the problem is still there. Our nwext guess is that it might be an injector problem but why would all 3 go bad at the same time.
Cylinders 1,3, and 5 are the back ones on the engine and the hardest to get access to.

Any ideas or past experiences?

Cylinders 1,2,3 are on the backside, aren't they? Firing order is 1,3,5 isn't it?

I'd be checking to see if the catalytic converters are plugged.

Ok then, if 1,3,5 are on the backside, then for sure I'd suspect a clogged CAT.

Firing order is 1,2,3,4,5,6 so sounds like you're right.

Yes, there should be one cat on each side, then a downstream cat after the Y pipe. I'd suspect the upstream cat on the backside. Sounds like a lot of miles, it's real common for the cat to collapse and plug up. It does all kinds of weird things when that happens, thus misfiring on one side and not the other.

The codes are:

PO300B Random Multiple Misfire Detected

PO301B Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected

PO303 Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected

PO305B Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected

PO446 Evaporative Emission System VEnt Control Circuit

I think I see the downstream cat. converter after the Y split but where is the upstream one? What does it look like?

I think they are the cans that the exhaust manifold bolts to, it appears to be cast like the manifolds. The exhaust manifold to cat should be a pretty big diameter with 6+ studs.
