My 2002 Sonata has 203,000 miles. The struts are squeaking and clunking bad. Tomorrow I am going to attempt to replace them myself. I was quoted by shops $900 average to do all 4. I can do it myself for under $300. I do have air tools and a heated garage so that will be helpful.
I plan on renting a universal spring/strut compressor. I have changed traditonal shocks before, but never struts. I watched some general videos on You Tube so I have a rough idea what to expect. But is there anything I should watch for specific to this model? Any unique tools, or odd size bolts? Problems others have had??? Will I likely have to replace more than the struts? Strut kits, plates, ???? Just trying to stay ahead so I don't hit a brick wall...... |

Dear blue,
1. Always mark the location of the three bolts at the top of the strut tower. White-out works best, white shoe liquid is second best, black marker is worst. 2. Use eye protection and gloves. 3. Ensure that you block the tire of the opposing wheel from the strut you are removing. 4. Always use jack stands. 5. You will need to get the wheel alignment checked afterward. 6. Use due care when releasing the tension on the coil spring. Careless release can kill or wound. 7. Check your CV joints boots in the bellows for cracks or splits. Easy to take care of while you have the wheel and strut off. 8. Register for hmaservice.com, and review there step-by-step instructions for strut removal. 9. Don't remember any odd size bolts, but you will need a large adjustable wrench or pipe wrench to remove the securing nut at the top of the strut...or was that a GM product? 10. Just check the lower control arm, the upper and lower spindle for any bending. 11. Might as well replace the the lower ball joint on left and right side while you are there. 12. Might as well replace the brake pads while you are there and check the rotors' remaining thickness. Byron

Ok, the fronts when well so far. I went to the backs and hit a huge wall! When I removed the retaining bolt for the lower part of the strut, I remove a few upper bolts and it should be free. Well the lower part is fused to adjuster. I'm trying to find the name for this part so I can head out Saturday and pick up a couple.
I sat for an hour trying to beat it off and nothing. I finally took a grinder to the shock part and freed the strut. Now I'm left with the rubber and inner metal sleeve fused to the adjuster. I took a measurement of where it was at and unscrewed it. Now I basically have the adjuster/nut and need to figure out the name..... Please help.... |

you're doing well so far, as byron said just be careful of the coil spring tension they can be very dangerous if you are careless
