Hello

I have a 2001 hyundai sonata. Today when I was just driving, It felt as if I was hit in the back by something, but there wasn't anything. And then came the check engine light, I have no idea whats wrong.

The car was able to run still, but it didn't feel smooth at all after, and it seemed to take extra for the car to move, so I had to push the accelerator down more than I usually do.

any tips? suggestions ?

Im betting your transmission got stuck in a particular gear. That happens to mine as well. Guaranteed, if your trying to take off in 3rd gear, it will move, but it will move slow. Nonetheless, thats not good. Their another thread open about the same transmission problem on a 2001 sonata.

Sounds like the speed sensor (crank speed sensor I think is what they call it). Same thing happened to my car driving one day. Afterwards it was like it was stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear. Take off's were really slow and it wouldn't upshift so I could only go like 50mph at 3K RPM or something silly. I don't remember what the cost was they also flushed the transmission too but haven't had any trouble since.

I've had exactly the same problem with my 2001 V6 Sonata. The error code was P0720. They replaced transmission output speed sensor (cost $87 plus labor).

Brad!

Could not miss that you posted your first post in May!

Got to hmaservice.com, and register.

TS Tab for troubleshooting

your engine
Transaxle

Work through the symptoms on the Troubleshooting table.

Please note the dealer can attach a SCANTool to your transmission, and the car will tell the dealer what is wrong! But it does sound like a bad speed sensor.

Be thankful that you don't own a 2001-2002 Dodge Stratus or Dodge Intrepid with the 2.7 liter engine. On my nephew's car, those same symptoms (except for the car able to run still!) was the crankshaft bearings seized from poor oil circulation.
