Default OBDII scanner not connecting

Hi, I have been experiencing problems with my 2000 executive Sonata V6 and it was recommended that I read the DTC's. So I bought a basic OBDII scanner and I connected it to the plug under the dash switched the ignition on and tried to read the codes but every time I try, the scanner says it "cannot communicate with the vehicle, try making sure it is connected and ignition on". Just wondering if there is any special procedure for reading codes out of these things?

You don't need to start the engine, just rotate the contact key to "ON".
If that failed, check the ECU/PCM fuse.

Have you tried it on another car?
Could be a bad scanner.

Check the fuses... I had the same issue i think it may be the sunroof fuse.

All previous posters look at it from the US perspective that mandates OBD2 compliance from 1996 on. Fine. But the US is not the world.

You are in Australia. OBD2 compliance mandated from 2006 on.

First of all verify that your vehicle supports the standard - most likely it doesn't since Hyundai wants you to see the Hyundai dealer when there is a problem - and for your car's year of make there's no legal obstacle for them.

Remark: The presence of the standard 16-pin DLC does in no way guarantee OBD2 support.

My OBDII scanner doesn't connect either... without a little trick. I have to plug in my scanner without turning key to "on" and wait until the scanner searches for "ISO 90??" something. Then I can turn on the key and it works fine. I takes a good minute, then I can turn on the key.
