I have owned my 2008 Elantra for 8 months. I am the second owner and the car has 75K highway miles. I would like to know what the RPM is supposed to be at WOT (getting onto highway).
I have seen it go to allmost 7K before shifting. That does not seem normal as redline is 6.5k The trans fluid was changed (by me) with the correct, reccomended fluid at 60K. That did not change the characteristics of the high shift points at all. It seems to be just fine with normal city driving, very smooth. A great car overall and I dont want to screw it up as I drive on the highway every day and need WOT to get into 80 MPH traffic. |

Redline is at 6500RPM. With an auto transmission you can't rely on the rev limiter
- two options. Either back off slightly at redline to coax the transmission into an upshift, or manually upshift from 2nd to 3rd using the gear lever. The latter technique is what I use to overtake road trains, and once committed I've never had to back out (these beasts are 175ft in length, not to be taken lightly!)[EDIT] here's a photo of what I mean, yes an Elantra can overtake them! |

how often you see 7k?
Besides, keep in mind the gauge is not exact. It may be off by as much as 500 RPM. If you had ScanGauge or something similar what read RPM from crankshaft sensor - then you will know the exact number. Solution for now - less gas. When you go beyond 5k, release gas slightly to let it upshift and floor it again. It goes better than its max upshift. Or get manual
