Default How Do I Get Rid of Mildew Smell in Air Conditioner?

I have a '07 Elantra Limited. Air coming out air conditioner has a fairly strong mildew smell. How can I get rid of the smell? Is there a drain plug somewhere in the ventilation system I can open to get rid of water?

When was the last time you checked or replaced the cabin air filter? That could also be the source of the smell if its really dirty. If the filter gets too dirty, dirt can bypass the filter and get on the evap core, causing bad odors.

1 - replace HVAC filter

2- while HVAC filter slot open, turn on fan, and dump a can of LYSOLŪ into the slot to fog the evaporator core and duct work

3 - open hood, clean the compost materials from the cowl area

Ride around a bit on a hot day with fan at full blast to get rid of smell. Now when you use ac several minutes before you reach your destination turn off ac but keep fan and vent on. Do this regularly and the smell will stay gone. Also change cabin air filters and obvious stuff. The last thing I would want is my car to smell like lysol. Ozium is not that bad if you must use a spray.
