Default Water in 2000 Tiburon Engine

Newbie here, so please be gentle. My car overheated. Battery light and light with arrow came on. I pulled off the freeway immediately. Was towed home.
Mechanic fixed alternator pulley and some hoses. I picked it up and on the way home it overheated again! The Mechanic came to me and pulled off the engine cap and looked at it and said "this dosent look good, water in the engine". Question, can H2O get in engine on first overheating event? Why didnt he look at that on the first repair? Thanks

2.0 is horrible for engine coolant temp control.. thermostats is a maintanance item, along with clean coolant..

Upper radiator hose leak at joint on back of head, radiators cracking at upper tank adjacent to upper hose joint, melted fill neck where rubber ring of the cap sits in the neck..

The 2.0 motor doesn't take overheating very well. Chances are you have warped the head, thus it leaks water into the motor now. If you're lucky you can get away with replacing the head, which is relatively expensive endevour, but cheaper than a new car.
