I do most of the minor service on my 2006 Azerra and the 30,000 mile mark is rapidly approaching. The owners manual says to replace the "Fuel Tank Air Filter" but there is nothing in the manual on how to do this or even where it is (probably near the fuel tank). Has anyone done this and, if so, what do I need to do other then pay the dealer some outrages amount of money for what is probably a simple job. Thanks in advance.

I've done a couple on some Kia's and Hyundais. They're by/along side the fill tube. Online service manuals cover this. http://www.hmaservice.com/
FWIW I've talked to several service managers about this item. Most tell me if you're not one to pack your tank when filling to ignore it.

…for those of you who are wondering
…with 39,000+ miles on my Azera, as well as being a technician in a number of different fields for well over 25 years, I just HAD to do it…if nothing else out of curiosity just to see if the Fuel Tank Air Filter DID in fact need replacing…in addition, I’d like to pass on some information that isn’t specifically mentioned in the hmaservice-dot-com Shop Instructions: - the Fuel Tank Air Filter [p/n 31453-3K500] replacement took 20 total minutes to replace - the ACTUAL part does NOT look like the dwg depicted in the “Shop Instructions” in that the filter portion appears almost rectangular in the dwg but in fact has a cylindrical body - the OLD part had a foam pad glued to one side, the NEW part did not - there are 2 hoses on the filter assy, not 1 as implied in the instructions - here’s what it took on this end: TOOLS: - jack - lug & torque wrench with 21mm socket - pliers - #2 phillips driver - 1/4 in drive ratchet with 10mm socket & 6 inch extension REMOVAL: - remove mud guard [if installed] with #2 phillips head driver - remove inner-rear fender liner with 10mm socket - squeeze & remove valve connector on fuel tank air filter - squeeze and slide hose clamps on both sides of filter assy - slide filter assy off of mounting tongue - work hoses off of both ends of filter [twist back & forth] - voila REINSTALL: - slide on hoses hoses [both sides], don’t forget clamps - slide filter back on to mounting tongue - push on valve connector [only goes on one way] until it’s seated [clicks] - reinstall inner fender liner and [if installed] mud guard - install & torque wheel, remove jack, done ...so, do I think it needed replacing ?? ...…YES, for 2 reasons: [1] the obvious…the fine print in the Hyundai warranty [2] the valve spring in the filter assy is clearly constructed very fine gauge wire as viewed through the inner port…and because I’m skeptical that the engineers in Korea didn’t specify some ultra high grade unobtanium for the base metal, I didn’t want to have to replace the filter assy in the middle of a NH winter when the spring failed or simply stuck enough to throw a check engine light (replacing plastic parts in the winter isn’t very much fun when you have to bend or push back clips as part of the removal or reinstall…as some readers are all to familiar with) …to “the cause” |
