Hello
I bought a 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe with 30k miles about 3 weeks ago. It is the 2.4 Cyl, non AWD version. I noticed this noise while driving from ~0-20 MPH. A light whining, strained noise from the front end. I brought it to my Hyundai dealership and they took a ride with me, and acknowledged they noticed a noise too. They changed power steering fluid once. Still heard the noise, so brought it back for 2nd time, they changed power steering reservoir, still heard the noise and brought it back for a 3rd time. They now say there is nothing wrong with the car. Between 2nd and 3rd time, when pre heating my car on a couple of cold days, I noticed there's an even worse noise while parked in the drive way. I told them about this. Is this noise normal? Does anyone have any information I can give them on how to fix this? Here is a video: IMG 0662 - YouTube |

I had a Ford van that would make noise when you accelerate and it was a heat shield. They clamped it or did something and never heard it again, even 4 years later. If that is what it is.
I've got the same car and engine. I have a rough idle problem right now when the car is in drive or reverse. Waiting for the dealer to call right now so we can resolve this problem. Good luck. |

It sounds more mechanical than a heat shield to me. More like a fan hitting something, or possibly a bad bearing... hopefully external to the engine.
If your dealer can't find the problem, you need to find a new dealer. That is definitely not normal. Let us know the outcome, Don |

If nothing is visible (like a fan hitting the fan shroud) underhood, then I agree, it sounds like a bad fan belt idler pulley bearing.

I popped the hood (almost no mechanical experience) and tried to listen for a rough estimate of where the noise is coming from, it honestly sounds like it's coming from with in the heart of the engine. I couldn't get under the car as we got some snow here in MA yesterday. I'm going to try again. Also, for what it's worth, the whining noise I hear from 0-20 doesn't happen if I just do a normal increase in neutral, only when I am actually moving. I am going to email the dealer the video and see if they want to take another look at it. After that, I guess try a different Hyundai dealer or contact corporate if they continue to say it's a normal noise? |

Maybe it is okay if I ask a question?
"the whining noise I hear from 0-20 doesn't happen if I just do a normal increase in neutral" What I heard on your car in the video let me to believe it is a loose part (heat shield) - I hear more of a rattle... If you pull up from 0-20 MPH using say hardly any revving you do not hear the whining? If you pull with say 3k RPM you hear the whining? If this whining comes from - if you will - somewhere in the engine I am actually thinking your alternator might cause the whining noise. It might not produce enough current and therefore a relay might complain or a relay might actually be on its way out drawing too much current causing the alternator to work extra hard and it could even be as simple as to clean the ground wire. All these things should be identified by your service manager at the dealership. Otherwise take him/her for a ride with you in the car to let him/her listen to it, might also bring a technician with enough experience to take away customer concern. |
