The repair facility the car was taken to said the filter had disintegrated and "could" have gotten into the engine and they needed to take the valve covers off and the oil pan off and replace seals with the flush cleaning. The oil filer had about 7500 miles on it and was put on (or not, depending on if the last place actually replaced it) if it did not then the mileages was 12000. This still seems to be exorbatant in charges. I disputed much of it and they backed off to a 50% discount. Is this scenario common? Or did they try to take advantage of my spouse?

Have you seen the disintegrated filter?
The fact that there is always oil left in the oil pan that could not drain (~1.2l); the non-changed oil filter reality; sucking the oil instead of draining ->> one could conclude that Hyundai's 6000 km (CAN) oil change intervals could be a piece of mind... |

We've not seen this reported here before. I assume your location (Apex) is in N.C., and that you visited a dealership in Raleigh? Did the dealer perform the previous oil change? Was this a dealer that was suggesting that the filter had disintegrated, or an independent shop?
DO you have the filter? Is (was) it a yellowish color and was it marked with a Korea country of origin? In any case, I'd have that vehicle out of that shop ASAP. |

The filter ripped in half when the cap rotated to remove the cap/filter assembly.. seen it here with aged filters that had oil change neglected.. I just deleted a handfull of pics of a shredded filter I had last night..
Lift out the remnants, install new Hyundai filter and go on your way.. Seals, that too funny.. pull off valve covers,, for what,, if the filter did come apart during operation, it would be in the pressure side of oil system, thus clogged up passages and trahsed motor alreadly. As noted above, change tho oil and filter, then RUN AWAY REAL FAST

It was actually a repair facility that starts with the first letter of our alphabet followed by two more and is located in the Bull City NC, the one we usually use here is Apex has been great. The filter paper, at one time may have been yellow, but in all honesty, it was black and falling apart, but the Hyundai dealer said the paper would get caught by the in line metal strainer-filter. Everyone else I speak to says there is no way for the paper to get into the main engine parts. This place also said the head gaskets were leaking and dripped into the alternator, so naturally, they changed those gaskets. I cleaned the alternator with some electronic solvent, when I got home but also told him there is absolutely no oil on my driveway. (I think they spilled it in the alternator pulling the valve covers. This just irks me more and more and am about to demand they give me the rest of the 1200 back, just because it appears to be all their error.

No I call them dealer service, this was a AAA repair shop. The one closest to our house is great, but I have the feeling the guys my spouse went to were on a fishing trip, or just plain did not know what they were doing.
when I finally got in touch with them, they eased back a bit on what happened. 1. She went there for an oil change. 2. they called here back, showed her the filter and told her they have to clean out the engine or she would have to buy a new engine. Because she was away from home, she told them to go ahead and then called me, I told them to do what they had to do (initially), but then called them back and told them to hold off. by that time they has the valve cover off, and drain pan off and were busy gathering parts to charge me with. When I finally found what I needed on the net (diagrams) I was livid and felt like they were now covering their wrenches because tI told them there was no need to do all that they were doing. I am a medical instrument engineer not a mechanic, but I was sure feeling the hook in my wifew lip from what they told her on their fishing trip, |
