I've got to consider whether it's worth holding onto the vehicle, or selling it for something that isn't so appealing to theives! |

Yikes amerdeem that's rotten luck - I do sympathise.
I was getting paranoid about this before selling the car (for other reasons) and saw this lock: http://www.motorspeed.com/Spare-Wheel-Lock-For-Outside-Mounted-Spare-Wheels-On-4x4-Veh/cat/3/sub/68/product/3929 which may offer extra protection. Frankly though any preventative measure you implement isn't going to deter a thief intent on having the wheel. Sooner than not replacing the wheel and relying on a tyre fix kit, I'd be tempted to source a steel rim 5×114.3 (PCD)/ 35 to 45 (offset) and 67.1 (bore) and a part worn tyre, then engrave your registration onto it on both sides and spray it a wild bright colour. Possibly grasping at straws here, but would the spare fit under the boot floor if you removed the plastic storage trays? If the wheel was stolen from the same location it may be worth setting up some PIR lights and some form of security camera. I caught some scroat damaging my car years ago after a spate of issues locally with just a trust video camera on long play hidden in the curtains. |

Thanks for the measurements sbis. That's really helpful. Although it's proving to be a real challenge to source a steel wheel that is 18" and in those measurements. Closest I can get is a cheap alloy, but where I can stipulate the PCD, no additional information is available on sites like eBay.
As for putting it in the boot after removing he tray isn't a option either as it wouldn't be secured and would defeat the purpose of buying this vehicle, which is a family car able to store shopping, prams etc. |

That's strange I got my steel wheels from Hyundai for my winter tires.

Now, it's usually cheaper in the UK to buy a set of 4 alloys than buy steel wheels !!

Too bad the system is not similar to what I have on my 2004 Kia Sedona. It's like a full cage around the spare tire and the mechanism to lower it is a threaded bolt fully hidden in the body work.
Pics didn't come out too nice but you'll get the idea This is the lowering nut (similar to SF) IMG_20121112_110020.jpg Here's the cage IMG_20121112_110040.jpg This is the threaded pipe that disappear into the body work and connect to the bolt IMG_20121112_105018.jpg Here's the hole in the body IMG_20121112_105044.jpg

That's wild! My steelies cost $50 each so I wonder what shipping charges would be compared to buying a steel rim in the UK. Either way I think the thief is looking at this like a game. Two more runs at the OPs'car and he has a full set of new tires and rims.
