A few questions about Short Air Intakes:
1) Is it worth the money? any gain in Hoursepower and gas mileage? 2) Because it sucks more air, does it tell MAS sensor to use more fuel? and you end up using more fuel than saving 3) People say because in general SAIs are close to MAS sensor, that is why it damages the sensor or make the sensor work weird. 4) SAIs are not as good as cold air intake as it sucks hot air. In this case, does using SAI only in the winter, assuming the temp under the hood will be cooler than summer, make any sense? I do not believe the use of heat shield under the hood in hot summer. 5) Does the brand of SAI matter? I have seen some DIY project where all you need is cone shaped filter and some pipe from hardware store. |

Primary effect of a Short Ram is that you get a satisfying growl under heavy throttle. Also usually a peculiar humming overtone at all times because of resonance from the intake.
The Accent factory air box already has the benefit of cold air from the fender area, so the warmer air charge from the engine bay is definitely a factor to keep in mind. I can't really comment on sensor issues, since I haven't encountered any. Performance benefits on these little engines is insignificant. (I dare say next to NIL, with an otherwise factory drivetrain). I didn't notice a big difference in fuel consumption, but then my fuel economy was always pretty poor from short-distance driving. You're paying for the look, and the sound. A "good" short ram is going to look a bit better. Performance doesn't even enter the equation. With this in mind, trying to rig up an SRI from hardware store parts makes some sense. I have the Weapon R Dragon intake. It came with extra ducting and hardware to install it in a CAI configuration if desired. It works as advertised -- which is to say I get strange looks from pedestrians when I bury the throttle, the car growls, and they snicker as my econobox still takes too bloody long to pull away. I can't say it was a great return on investment. |

1) the accent done not have a mas it has a map so there's no damage or weird issues...
2) it's a personal choice either for looks or sounds 3) DIY is you cheapest best option to convert from stock and vice versa.. Fine opinion worth the 10$ I spent. Check out YouTube vids and surf the net, and you be the judge! |

The 2006 did have a MAF but that's it for the MC generation. Switched to MAP for 2007.

I did not know 2009 did not have the MAS sensor but MAP, I think it stands for Manifold Absolute Pressure. and my scangauge actually reads that. Is MAP located in throttle unit? If so, I assume it would be far away from the cone filter which means less chance to cause a faulty MAP sensor.

remove intake snorkel (that runs underneath battery tray) from the factory airbox.
add k&n drop-in filter to factory airbox. congratz you just saved a bunch of money and have nearly all the same effects of a short ram intake. (the sound, no change in fuel economy, barely noticeable change in power, well, except the car breathes a little better at higher rpms). still looks factory under hood as well.

i definitely noticed a huge improvement over stock. i went with the aem/hyundai SRI.
before, it seemed to struggle for air. After, no more.....
