Exclamation Transmission Fill Question

Hi guys, had a quick question.

I had to fill up my transmission with the ATF SP III fluid. I added some, and then started the car, warmed it up and went through all gears(P, R, N, D, 2, L). I then checked the level on level ground and shifter on "N". It was in the midway mark of the "Hot" on the dipstick. So, I thought all is good.

However, I checked this morning while the engine was cold, and the fluid is "WAY OVER" the hot line. It is like 1.5 inches over it. From what I understand, the "cold" mark on the dipstick is actually below the "hot" mark. So, why is this happening? Does anybody know? I am just curious to know if I somehow screwed this up.

Thanks,
Ashish M.

All the fluid wasn't being pumped thru the transmission, so it was all in the pan.

So, its normal? Then, why is the "cold" mark on the dipstick lower then the "hot" mark? Like I said, just curious...

Well according to the book, you should check it on a level surface in neutral. Also, if you put the recommended amount of fluid in, I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you don't hear any banging and it shifts and sounds fine, let her rip. I foyu atill aren't convinced, call your local tranny shop. I'm sure they can explain it over the phone better than I can.

Because the level will be lower if the fluid is COLD (with engine running, trans in Neutral) than it will be once it has gotten HOT and expanded (again, with engine running, trans in Neutral).

Understood. Thats why I was confused. I thought it meant cold, like how we check the mark for engine oil, while the car is off and the engine is cold.

Thanks for clearing that up!!!
