My parents are using a 2001 hyundai accent with around 125k miles on it. The trans has been giving problerms where it gets stuck in 3rd gear lately. I suggested to my mom a trans fluid flush but she decided to tell me that you can "destroy your transmission if you change the fluid after 60,000 miles"...

Fact is we've never ever done any trans work to this car and now I'm concerned tht it might need some serious tranny work soon.

Pleawse give me some ideas. The car tends to do this thing where you'll be driving and it gets stuck in 2nd or 3re gewar and stops shifting. Usually you can shut the car off and restart it and you're set but its been getting worse lately.

I've had a similar problem with my Accent recently. Unfortunately you have internal damage and the only thing you can do is get another transmission or have yours rebuilt. As a reference mine cost about $2500 to have rebuilt.

I agree. Changing the fluid probably won't help and could make it worse. You could try changing the fluid yourself it see if it helps. You would only be out the cost of the fluid. If he helps, then great but if it doesn't you'll need to get some internal transmission work done.

I bought my Accent used and changed (not power flushed) my ATF at 135k. I don't know if it was ever changed, and it was brownish black, not red like it should've been. And I've seen no ill effects in the last 10k miles. I didn't use Hyundai SP-III oil either. I used Castrol ATF high mileage.

Third gear getting stuck could be something more serious. Try a drain and fill. If it doesn't work you're not out that much.

I have the same problem on my 2001 accent (SOHC 1.5) and my MIL (check light) is on. So I did an OBD2 scan and these are the codes the scan retrieved: P0722, P0733 and P0734.
These are all transmission codes. P0733 & P0734 are related to the third gear and fourth gear system respectively. P0722 is related to the pulse generator and when this code is set, it holds in 2nd or 3rd gear as a fail-safe measure; ie. "stuck in 2nd or 3rd".

You can check if the pulse generator is at fault but more than likely you'll need either a new or rebuilt transmission. Another way to check is to drop down your transmission pan and see if there are metal shavings in the pan. If so, then the transmission is probably grinding away.

Me and my friend will be rebuilding ours when the weather gets a little warmer. It'll cost me $360 for the rebuild kit (inc clutches) and $260 for the torque converter.
