Hi, I have a 1999 Excel (Accent). The other day it just wouldn't start, It would crank over fine, but it wouldn’t fire. After trying a few different things, we decided to put a jump start pack on it, even though it was still cranking over on its own battery. After about 20 seconds of cranking with the starter pack it fired up and ran fine.
I drove it down to the shops and back with no problems. The next day the same problem, no firing. It will crank fine (nice and quick) and the battery is only a little over 3 months old. I've checked the CAM angle sensor, and its getting power, and the earth is fine. I've also checked the throttle position sensor and that is also working correctly. I ran through the trouble code process and it came back saying there is nothing wrong, but when I tested the Actuator Control Sequence Procedure it came back saying there was a problem with injector 1-2-3-4. There is defiantly no spark and the injectors are defiantly not working either. I was thinking it might be the Crank angle sensor, but the test didn’t show it as been faulty. I was going to test it but I cant find where about it is located. Does anyone have any idea's? maybe faulty ECU? or crank angle sensor (If so, where the **** is it??) I would usually give up at this stage and bring it to a mechanic, but I've fallen on some hard times, and don’t have any spare money to spend on it. Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks Tim |

You may try check the fuel system .
1: How long before did you chenge the fuel filter? 2: check the fule pump. 3: IF you can DIY, yank the fuel injector , check and clear it. Also, one easy way is to check the spark plug. Check the color, gap and smell. Those stuff maybe give you clue. OR, change 4 new spark plug just cost you 5$. Keep in mind, corect fire need : FUEL, AIR and SPARK. BTW, how many mileage on it now? |

Thanks for the reply.
I've had all 4 spark plugs out, and while cranking the engine there was no spark at all. Also I couldn’t get the injector clips off to check the injector wiring, so I unbolted the fuel rail and pulled the injector rail/injectors out of the inlet manifold, and also, whilst cranking they were not spraying any fuel. Given that the coils and injectors aren’t' operating at all, I don’t believe it could be just a fuel filter/fuel pump, as I would still be getting spark. I've checked to see if I can hear the fuel pump turn on but I cant, although I've never really heard it before either. I’m think its either got to be the Crank angle sensor or the ECM. Does anyone know where about the Crank angle sensor is located? I'm having real trouble trying to find it. On a side note, when I did the diagnostic check it read back four 4’s (All find). I then unplugged the cam angle sensor, and the throttle position sensor. Then did the test again, and it still read back that everything was fine.. What’s the deal with that? Thanks for the help. Cheers Tim |

Ok, well it was the Crank angle sensor. For anyone interested it is located off to the right of the exhaust manifold, near the bottom of the block. Its easiest to access from underneath the car.
As apposed to the Hyundai Web Tech document it has three wires running to it not two. A replacement was going to cost $160 Aus from the local Hyundai dealer, I managed to fine one from a single cam engine at the wreckers, which he gave me for free. So it worked out to be a cheap fix in the end.. I'm still a little confused as why the diagnostics told me everything was OK. Thanks. Tim |
