Hi All, I lost the master key for my car and have been using the spare key for a while, problem free. However, the car is intermitently NOT starting now, and I've been told by my local dealer that I need a new immobilizer which is going to cost me EUR 1000.00 plus labour which I can't afford - HELP!! Car is a 99 Accent Gold GLS and has very low miles, well cared for car....has anyone ever had a similar problem? Would buying a new master key at this stage do any good? If it starts now and then can the mobilizer really be totally knackered??....Would it be worth talking to another dealer? The problem is that they charge EUR 160.00 for checking it each time / attaching it to 'the computer' or should I just get a loan out & bite the bullet for the new immobilizer??

Hi Siobhan! ........sorry to hear of your problem!.

I would definitely take your car to another Hyundai Dealership & not mention what the other people said at all!.

Meanwhile I have started some enquiries of my own & will come back on this, but I`m sure some of our guys on here will also have some ideas.

Siobhan, you could try to get a used ecm from a U.S. Accent. U.S. accents do not use the immobilizer so it will not need a signal from the immobilizer to start the engine. Of course that is if the U.S. ecm will work with an Accent from Ireland. Just a thought.

it would have to be an older accent (around 1996 or before) as I read somewhere that the later accents all came with the immobilisor which requires a chip in the key - so and older one may be the way to go. I don't think it would have to be one from the USA either - so you might be able to get one at a local scrappy.

Good luck fixing this and let us know how it goes.

Hi Siobhan!.......back as promised!.
This is not the ideal solution, but it beats the **** out of paying 1000 Euros!.

Take your car to another Hyundai Dealership & ask them to disable your immobiliser using their Hi-Scan Pro device..........apparently this can be done in moments & should cost you peanuts!.

However this radical solution + your apparent knowledge, may well sting their male pride into suggesting an affordable, less drastic, answer to your problem!.

You should have received an small steel plate with you keys, which signifiy's the number or code of your key which ironically is the same coded signal being send from the Smartra system to the Engine management system. If you've lost that plate and don't know the number call hyundai spare parts and give them your vehicle identification number and I confident that they will be able to supply you with a new master key!!!.

I am a tad confused as to which model you have????

99 Accent = X3
00 Accent = LC

X3 = not equipped with SMARTRA
LC = equipped with smartra

So the way I see it if you have an X3 Accent, then you cannot have the SMARTRA system in your car!

Please confirm.

Are you sure on that one Dr Hundi? - I have an X3 Accent which I am told is fitted with the Immobilisor with the chip in the key ... is there a way to tell the difference between that and an old immobilisor system? I'm just thinking that the X3's in Australia might not have SMARTRS's, but the UK one's might. I'd like to know as this might help clear up this sort of question in the future. Cheers for your efforts mate .

Easy to identify which system you have!

If you key head is black with a small Hyundai simple engraved nearest the key metal and on the reverse if there is a letter M engraved with 6 grip groves on the top of the key head then you have a Smartra immobilizer system.

If you have a black flat finish key head with only a large Hyundai logo engrave and no grip grooves or letters engrave then you don't have a factory fitted immoblizer system. If this is the case then under the dash there may be a relay that's causing your problem. An aftermarket immobilzer does not interfere with the vehicles engine management system.

Well it looks like my car has a SMARTRA immobilisor fitted. Thanks for the info JOHNC. - looks like the X3 in Australia doesn't have the SMARTRA but the UK one does (after a certain year - but not certain which year) - Great - more complications!!! (same cars in different countries with different set-ups)
