Default Loud Clacking noise from engine

Yesterday I noticed a slight clacking noise coming from the engine, but it was only when I was just barely on the gas. It wasn't there at idle. Now today after an hour drive, it is loud, and at all rpm's.

What could it be? I'm worried...

Put a plastic tube in your ear and use it like a stethoscope to try and locate the source of said clacking.

Its a 4cyl 2006 Sonata. Sound is coming from the engine, not sure from where yet, sounds like metal clacking on metal, it's bad enough that I don't want to turn it on anymore.

The weird thing is that there is no loss of power, engine temps are normal, nothing visibly leaking.

Tow it..

We starting to see tensioner and rail extend to point that chain is loose and flopping, and the chain cuts into the oil jet tube that streams oil onto crankshaft cog and chain.. I just did 1 not quite a month ago, neighbor did 1 a couple month ago..

Dont let the chain jump, or it trash the engine.. ours jumped, but not far enough to crash

chain
2 rails
tensioner
oil jet
front crank seal
tube of goo
valve cover gasket
oil
oil filter
consider replace drive belt if aged when going back together

Yeah, I'll have it towed. I was thinking maybe the chain or something, cause the car is running just fine. Idle is good, just the noise, it's really bad.

How much more can I expect to pay at the dealership than at a mechanic?

This isn't something I'm confident doing by myself, I've messed up a timing belt before...

Make sure to update with their diagnosis.

I had a similar noise once and it was the oil filter. As we all know, Hyundai has a TSB warning that aftermarket oil filters can cause a knock. Going back to a dealer filter fixed it for me.

Noise is coming from inside the engine. Mechanic thinks it's a wrist pin. So basically they said I need a new motor. Can get a used one for $2-3k plus delivery and install it comes out to be about $4,700. I didn't pay much more than that for the car, so I may just be getting rid of it. Maybe my wife will get that minivan she's been wanting...

The oil filter issue does cause a knocking form inside the engine. In my case, it was knocking so bad I was sure the engine was shot. A new filter fixed it.

I'm not saying the diagnosis is wrong. They very well could be right. But, since filters are a known issue on this car it might be worth a shot.

Is this a dealer or independent shop you took it to?

I'd be a little leery of a shop wanting to change an engine. Easy money. I'd take it to at least one more shop to confirm.
